Day and night we worship the elephant-faced, one-tusked one, who makes Parvati’s lotus face bloom as the sun does a lotus, and who gives many things to his devotees.
The wordplay
Aga means that which does not move, a mountain; agaja is the mountain’s daughter, Parvati. As a lotus opens at the sight of the sun, the mother’s face opens at the sight of her son. Gajanana follows agajanana directly, and the sounds play off each other.
Read together, anekadam tam sounds like anekadantam, one with many tusks. It must be split as anekadam, giver of many things, and tam, him. Right after it comes ekadanta, the one-tusked.

For life today
The verse first sees Ganapati as a mother’s son, and only then as a god. The picture of a mother’s face lighting up at her child is familiar in every home.
The one who lost a tusk is not behind in giving. Even with a loss, the power to give to others remains; that is the small lesson of this verse.
