ದಿನದ ಮೊದಲ ನೋಟ ಯಾವುದರ ಮೇಲೆ ಬೀಳುತ್ತದೆ? ಇಂದು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನವರಿಗೆ ಅದು ಮೊಬೈಲಿನ ಪರದೆ. ಹಿಂದಿನ ತಲೆಮಾರು ಆ ಜಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮದೇ ಎರಡು ಅಂಗೈಗಳನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟಿತ್ತು.
ಹಾಸಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಳಿತು, ಎರಡೂ ಕೈಗಳನ್ನು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ತೆರೆದಂತೆ ಮುಖದ ಮುಂದೆ ಹಿಡಿದು ಹೇಳುವ ಎರಡು ಸಾಲು ಇದು. ಇದನ್ನು ಕರದರ್ಶನ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಕರಾಗ್ರೇ ವಸತೇ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀಃ ಕರಮಧ್ಯೇ ಸರಸ್ವತೀ ।
ಕರಮೂಲೇ ತು ಗೋವಿಂದಃ ಪ್ರಭಾತೇ ಕರದರ್ಶನಮ್ ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
कराग्रे वसते लक्ष्मीः करमध्ये सरस्वती ।
करमूले तु गोविन्दः प्रभाते करदर्शनम् ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಕರಾಗ್ರೇ (कराग्रे, karāgre) = ಕೈಯ ತುದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಬೆರಳುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ (at the tip of the hand, the fingers)
- ವಸತೇ (वसते, vasate) = ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ (dwells)
- ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀಃ (लक्ष्मीः, lakṣmīḥ) = ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀ, ಸಂಪತ್ತಿನ ದೇವತೆ (Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity)
- ಕರಮಧ್ಯೇ (करमध्ये, karamadhye) = ಅಂಗೈಯ ನಡುವೆ (in the middle of the palm)
- ಸರಸ್ವತೀ (सरस्वती, sarasvatī) = ಸರಸ್ವತೀ, ವಿದ್ಯೆಯ ದೇವತೆ (Sarasvati, goddess of learning)
- ಕರಮೂಲೇ (करमूले, karamūle) = ಅಂಗೈಯ ಬುಡದಲ್ಲಿ, ಮಣಿಕಟ್ಟಿನ ಬಳಿ (at the base of the palm, near the wrist)
- ತು (तु, tu) = ಮತ್ತು, ಹಾಗೆಯೇ (and)
- ಗೋವಿಂದಃ (गोविन्दः, govindaḥ) = ಗೋವಿಂದ, ವಿಷ್ಣು (Govinda, Vishnu)
- ಪ್ರಭಾತೇ (प्रभाते, prabhāte) = ಬೆಳಗಿನ ಹೊತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ (at daybreak)
- ಕರದರ್ಶನಮ್ (करदर्शनम्, karadarśanam) = ಕೈಯನ್ನು ನೋಡುವುದು (looking at one’s hands)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಕೈಯ ತುದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ, ಅಂಗೈಯ ನಡುವೆ ಸರಸ್ವತೀ, ಅಂಗೈಯ ಬುಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಗೋವಿಂದ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಬೆಳಗಿನ ಹೊತ್ತು ಕೈಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಬೇಕು.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Lakshmi dwells at the tips of the fingers, Sarasvati in the middle of the palm, and Govinda at its base. So at daybreak one should look at one’s hands.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this verse
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಯಾವ ಒಂದು ಗ್ರಂಥಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದು ಎಂದು ಖಚಿತವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುವುದು ಕಷ್ಟ. ಇದೊಂದು ಮನೆಮನೆಯ ಪರಂಪರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾಯಿಂದ ಬಾಯಿಗೆ ಬಂದ ಪ್ರಾತಃಸ್ಮರಣ ಶ್ಲೋಕ.
It is hard to trace this verse to any one text with certainty. It is a morning verse that has come down by word of mouth, from household to household.
ಮೂರನೆಯ ಪಾದಕ್ಕೆ ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಆವೃತ್ತಿಗಳಿವೆ. ದಕ್ಷಿಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಕರಮೂಲೇ ತು ಗೋವಿಂದಃ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೆಲವು ಕಡೆ ಕರಮೂಲೇ ಸ್ಥಿತಾ ಗೌರೀ ಎಂದೂ, ಇನ್ನು ಕೆಲವು ಕಡೆ ಕರಮೂಲೇ ತು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾ ಎಂದೂ ಹೇಳುವುದುಂಟು. ಅರ್ಥದ ದಿಕ್ಕು ಬದಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
The third quarter has several versions. In the south it is usually karamule tu govindah. Some say karamule sthita gauri, and others karamule tu brahma. The direction of the meaning does not change.
ಕೈ ಎಂದರೆ ದುಡಿಮೆ. ಬೆರಳ ತುದಿಯ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀ ಕೆಲಸದಿಂದ ಬರುವ ಸಂಪಾದನೆ, ಅಂಗೈ ನಡುವಿನ ಸರಸ್ವತೀ ಕೆಲಸದ ಹಿಂದಿರುವ ತಿಳಿವಳಿಕೆ, ಬುಡದ ಗೋವಿಂದ ಇವೆರಡಕ್ಕೂ ಆಧಾರವಾದ ಧರ್ಮ ಎಂದು ಹಲವರು ಅರ್ಥೈಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
The hand stands for work. Many read Lakshmi at the fingertips as what work earns, Sarasvati in the palm as the understanding behind the work, and Govinda at the base as the dharma that supports both.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವರನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಲು ಎಲ್ಲಿಗೂ ಹೋಗಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ. ದಿನವಿಡೀ ನಮ್ಮ ಜೊತೆಗೇ ಇರುವ ಎರಡು ಕೈಗಳನ್ನು ಒಂದು ಕ್ಷಣ ಗಮನವಿಟ್ಟು ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಸಾಕು.
This verse does not send us anywhere to look for the divine. It is enough to look, with attention, for one moment, at the two hands that stay with us all day.
