ಹಾಸಿಗೆಯಿಂದ ಇಳಿಯುವುದು ದಿನದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಕ್ರಿಯೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೂ ಒಂದು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಇದೆ ಎನ್ನುವುದೇ ಸ್ವಾರಸ್ಯ.
ಕರದರ್ಶನದ ನಂತರ, ಕಾಲು ನೆಲಕ್ಕೆ ಊರುವ ಮೊದಲು, ನೆಲವನ್ನು ಮುಟ್ಟಿ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೊತ್ತಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತ ಈ ಸಾಲು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇಡುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ವರವಲ್ಲ, ಕ್ಷಮೆ.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಸಮುದ್ರವಸನೇ ದೇವಿ ಪರ್ವತಸ್ತನಮಂಡಲೇ ।
ವಿಷ್ಣುಪತ್ನಿ ನಮಸ್ತುಭ್ಯಂ ಪಾದಸ್ಪರ್ಶಂ ಕ್ಷಮಸ್ವ ಮೇ ॥

समुद्रवसने देवि पर्वतस्तनमण्डले ।

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಸಮುದ್ರವಸನೇ (समुद्रवसने, samudravasane) = ಸಮುದ್ರವನ್ನೇ ವಸ್ತ್ರವಾಗಿ ಉಟ್ಟವಳೇ (O you who wear the ocean as your garment)
- ದೇವಿ (देवि, devi) = ದೇವಿಯೇ (O goddess)
- ಪರ್ವತಸ್ತನಮಂಡಲೇ (पर्वतस्तनमण्डले, parvatastanamaṇḍale) = ಪರ್ವತಗಳನ್ನೇ ಎದೆಯಾಗಿ ಹೊಂದಿದವಳೇ (O you whose bosom is the mountains)
- ವಿಷ್ಣುಪತ್ನಿ (विष्णुपत्नि, viṣṇupatni) = ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಪತ್ನಿಯೇ (O consort of Vishnu)
- ನಮಃ (नमः, namaḥ) = ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ (salutation)
- ತುಭ್ಯಂ (तुभ्यं, tubhyaṃ) = ನಿನಗೆ (to you)

- ಕ್ಷಮಸ್ವ (क्षमस्व, kṣamasva) = ಕ್ಷಮಿಸು (forgive)
- ಮೇ (मे, me) = ನನ್ನ (my)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಸಮುದ್ರವನ್ನೇ ಉಡುಗೆಯಾಗಿ ಉಟ್ಟು, ಪರ್ವತಗಳನ್ನೇ ಎದೆಯಾಗಿ ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ದೇವಿಯೇ, ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಪತ್ನಿಯೇ, ನಿನಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ. ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ನನ್ನ ಕಾಲಿನಿಂದ ಸೋಕುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ, ಅದನ್ನು ಕ್ಷಮಿಸು.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
O Goddess who wears the ocean as her garment and whose bosom is the mountains, O consort of Vishnu, salutations to you. Forgive me for touching you with my feet.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this verse
ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು ಒಂದು ಜೀವಂತ ದೇಹವಾಗಿ ನೋಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಸಮುದ್ರ ಅವಳ ಉಡುಗೆ, ಪರ್ವತಗಳು ಅವಳ ಎದೆ. ಎದೆ ಹಾಲೂಡಿಸುವ ತಾಯಿಯ ಸಂಕೇತ. ನದಿಗಳು ಹುಟ್ಟುವುದು ಪರ್ವತಗಳಲ್ಲೇ ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನೂ ಹಲವರು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
The earth is seen here as a living body. The ocean is her garment, the mountains her breast, the image of a mother who nourishes. Many also recall that rivers are born in the mountains.
ಭೂದೇವಿಯನ್ನು ವಿಷ್ಣುಪತ್ನಿ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ವರಾಹ ಅವತಾರದ ಕಥೆಯ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ. ಸಮುದ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗಿದ್ದ ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು ವರಾಹ ತನ್ನ ಕೋರೆಹಲ್ಲಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ಎತ್ತಿ ತಂದನೆಂದು ಪುರಾಣಗಳು ಹೇಳುತ್ತವೆ. ವೈಷ್ಣವ ಪರಂಪರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀದೇವಿ ಮತ್ತು ಭೂದೇವಿ ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಪತ್ನಿಯರು.
The earth goddess is called Vishnu’s consort against the background of the Varaha story, in which the Puranas tell of the boar lifting the sunken earth out of the ocean on his tusk. In the Vaishnava tradition, Sridevi and Bhudevi are Vishnu’s two consorts.
ಕೆಲವು ಆವೃತ್ತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲ ಸಾಲು ಸಮುದ್ರವಸನೇ ದೇವೀ ಎಂದೂ, ಎರಡನೆಯ ಪಾದ ಪರ್ವತಸ್ತನಮಂಡಿತೇ ಎಂದೂ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅರ್ಥ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಒಂದೇ.
In some versions the second word is devi with a long vowel, and the second quarter reads parvatastanamandite. The meaning is nearly the same.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ನಾವು ದಿನವಿಡೀ ತುಳಿಯುವುದು ನೆಲವನ್ನೇ. ಅದರ ಮೇಲೆಯೇ ಬೆಳೆ, ನೀರು, ಮನೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ದಿನಕ್ಕೊಮ್ಮೆ ಕ್ಷಮೆ ಕೇಳುವುದು ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆಯ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ.
All day we walk on the ground, and on it stand our crops, our water, our homes. Asking its pardon once a day is a small practice of gratitude.
ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಪಾಠವೂ ಇದೆ. ಅನಿವಾರ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಕೆಲಸದಲ್ಲೂ ಯಾರಿಗಾದರೂ ನೋವಾಗಬಹುದು ಎಂಬ ಎಚ್ಚರ. ಅಂತಹ ಎಚ್ಚರ ಇರುವವರು ಉಳಿದ ದಿನವನ್ನೂ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಮೆತ್ತಗೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.
There is another lesson in it too: the awareness that even what we cannot avoid doing may hurt someone. People who carry that awareness tend to walk a little more gently through the rest of the day.
