ಕತ್ತಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದಂತೆ ದೇವರ ಮುಂದಿನ ದೀಪ ಹಚ್ಚುವುದು ಹಲವು ಮನೆಗಳ ದಿನದ ಗಡಿರೇಖೆ. ಆ ಹೊತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಕೈಮುಗಿದು ಈ ಎರಡು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುವುದನ್ನು ಹಲವರು ನೆನಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಮೊದಲ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ದೀಪದ ಬೆಳಕನ್ನೇ ಪರಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತದೆ. ಎರಡನೆಯದು ಆ ಬೆಳಕಿನಿಂದ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬೇಕಾದ ಶುಭ, ಆರೋಗ್ಯ, ಸಂಪತ್ತನ್ನು ಕೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ದೀಪಜ್ಯೋತಿಃ ಪರಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ದೀಪಜ್ಯೋತಿರ್ಜನಾರ್ದನಃ ।
ದೀಪೋ ಹರತು ಮೇ ಪಾಪಂ ದೀಪಜ್ಯೋತಿರ್ನಮೋಽಸ್ತು ತೇ ॥
ಶುಭಂ ಕರೋತಿ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಮಾರೋಗ್ಯಂ ಧನಸಂಪದಃ ।
ಶತ್ರುಬುದ್ಧಿವಿನಾಶಾಯ ದೀಪಜ್ಯೋತಿರ್ನಮೋಽಸ್ತು ತೇ ॥

शुभं करोति कल्याणमारोग्यं धनसम्पदः ।

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ದೀಪಜ್ಯೋತಿಃ (दीपज्योतिः, dīpajyotiḥ) = ದೀಪದ ಬೆಳಕು (the light of the lamp)
- ಪರಬ್ರಹ್ಮ (परब्रह्म, parabrahma) = ಪರಬ್ರಹ್ಮ, ಪರಮ ಸತ್ಯ (the supreme Brahman)
- ಜನಾರ್ದನಃ (जनार्दनः, janārdanaḥ) = ಜನಾರ್ದನ, ವಿಷ್ಣು (Janardana, Vishnu)
- ದೀಪಃ (दीपः, dīpaḥ) = ದೀಪ (the lamp)
- ಹರತು (हरतु, haratu) = ಹೋಗಲಾಡಿಸಲಿ (may it remove)
- ಮೇ (मे, me) = ನನ್ನ (my)
- ಪಾಪಮ್ (पापम्, pāpam) = ಪಾಪವನ್ನು (sin, wrongdoing)
- ನಮೋಽಸ್ತು ತೇ (नमोऽस्तु ते, namo’stu te) = ನಿನಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ (salutations to you)
- ಶುಭಮ್ (शुभम्, śubham) = ಶುಭವನ್ನು (good fortune)
- ಕರೋತಿ (करोति, karoti) = ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ, ತರುತ್ತದೆ (brings)
- ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಮ್ (कल्याणम्, kalyāṇam) = ಮಂಗಳವನ್ನು (well-being)

- ಧನಸಂಪದಃ (धनसम्पदः, dhanasampadaḥ) = ಧನ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಪತ್ತನ್ನು (wealth and prosperity)
- ಶತ್ರುಬುದ್ಧಿವಿನಾಶಾಯ (शत्रुबुद्धिविनाशाय, śatrubuddhivināśāya) = ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ದ್ವೇಷಬುದ್ಧಿಯ ನಾಶಕ್ಕಾಗಿ (for the destruction of hostile thoughts)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ದೀಪದ ಬೆಳಕೇ ಪರಬ್ರಹ್ಮ, ದೀಪದ ಬೆಳಕೇ ಜನಾರ್ದನ. ಈ ದೀಪ ನನ್ನ ಪಾಪವನ್ನು ಹೋಗಲಾಡಿಸಲಿ. ಓ ದೀಪಜ್ಯೋತಿಯೇ, ನಿನಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ.
ಶುಭವನ್ನೂ ಮಂಗಳವನ್ನೂ ಆರೋಗ್ಯವನ್ನೂ ಧನಸಂಪತ್ತನ್ನೂ ತರುವ, ದ್ವೇಷದ ಬುದ್ಧಿಯನ್ನು ನಾಶಮಾಡುವ ದೀಪಜ್ಯೋತಿಯೇ, ನಿನಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
The light of the lamp is the supreme Brahman; the light of the lamp is Janardana. May this lamp remove my wrongdoing. O light of the lamp, salutations to you.
O light of the lamp, you who bring good fortune, well-being, health and wealth, and who destroy the thought of enmity, salutations to you.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout these verses
ಈ ಎರಡು ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳಿಗೆ ಹಲವು ಆವೃತ್ತಿಗಳಿವೆ. ಕೆಲವರು ಮೊದಲ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಸಾಲನ್ನು ದೀಪೋ ಹರತು ಮೇ ಪಾಪಂ ಸಂಧ್ಯಾದೀಪ ನಮೋಽಸ್ತು ತೇ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಎರಡನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಶತ್ರುಬುದ್ಧಿವಿನಾಶಾಯ ಬದಲು ಮಮ ಬುದ್ಧಿಪ್ರಕಾಶಾಯ ಎಂಬ ಓದೂ ಇದೆ.
Both verses exist in several versions. Some say the second line of the first verse as dipo haratu me papam sandhyadipa namo stu te. In the second verse, mama buddhiprakashaya, for the light of my understanding, is also heard in place of shatrubuddhivinashaya.
ಶತ್ರುಬುದ್ಧಿ ಎಂಬ ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ಶತ್ರುಗಳ ದುಷ್ಟಬುದ್ಧಿ ಎಂದೂ, ನಮ್ಮೊಳಗಿನ ಶತ್ರುತ್ವದ ಭಾವ ಎಂದೂ ಎರಡು ಅರ್ಥ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡನೆಯದನ್ನು ಆರಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ; ದೀಪ ಹೊರಗಿನ ಕತ್ತಲಿಗಿಂತ ಒಳಗಿನ ಕತ್ತಲೆಯನ್ನು ಓಡಿಸಲಿ ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥದಲ್ಲಿ.
Shatrubuddhi is read both as the ill will of enemies and as the feeling of enmity within ourselves. The second reading is chosen here, in the sense that the lamp should chase away the darkness inside more than the darkness outside.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಆರೋಗ್ಯವನ್ನು ದೀಪದಿಂದ ಕೇಳುವುದು ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆಯ ಭಾಷೆ. ಅದು ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯ ಬದಲಿಯಲ್ಲ; ರೋಗ ಬಂದಾಗ ವೈದ್ಯರನ್ನು ಕಾಣುವುದೂ ಆ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆಯ ಭಾಗವೇ.
Asking the lamp for health is the language of prayer. It is not a substitute for treatment; seeing a doctor when illness comes is also part of that prayer.
ಸಂಜೆಯ ದೀಪ ಕುಟುಂಬವನ್ನು ಒಂದು ಕ್ಷಣ ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಟಿವಿ ಆರಿಸಿ, ದಿನದ ಜಗಳಗಳನ್ನು ಅಲ್ಲೇ ಬಿಟ್ಟುಬಿಡುವ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಅರ್ಥ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಜವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
The evening lamp gathers the family for a moment. If that moment becomes a habit of switching off the television and leaving the day’s quarrels behind, the second verse comes true at home.
