For what reason does the moon gladden the world with his nectar filled rays? For what reason does the cloud sprinkle the earth with its stream of water? For what reason, going round and round, does the sun delight the three worlds? The mind of the good, in doing good to others, looks for no pretext.

About this subhashita

Upadhi means a condition, a pretext, an added reason. The moon, cloud and sun have no reason beyond giving, and giving is simply their nature.

The reading of the phrase bhramam bhramamayam follows the printed book and may be slightly uncertain. We have taken the natural sense, that the sun keeps on circling.

Asking three questions and giving one answer lifts the verse like a stage scene. The reader waits till the answer comes.

For life today

A teacher with a child, a doctor sitting by a patient, may once ask: do we do the good thing only because some other gain sits behind it?

This is not a hard rule that there be no reward. One may note the finer difference: a reward may come, but it should not be the first reason.
