The mouse tries to weigh Mount Kailasa. The crow longing for Garuda’s flesh, and the restless jackal wishing to kill the serpent Takshaka, wag and stir. The frog wants to reach the far shore of the ocean that swallows even serpents. The petty man whose fall is near mostly does not remember the deed that fits him.

About this subhashita

Tarkshya is Garuda, and Takshaka is a serpent king of the Puranas, as they are known. They bring the weight of great names here. The other animals can be read simply as images.

Each animal reaches for something beyond its measure: a mountain, Garuda, Takshaka, an ocean. The last line gives the reason, that when ruin is near the fitting deed is forgotten.

For life today

In learning this is a familiar picture. A plan to master a whole subject in a week mostly fails. A step of the right size is perhaps the wiser one.

Courage and rashness are different. Before taking up a new venture, asking what the fitting task now is, is the lesson of this verse.
