A practice many people try
Many people sit quietly for a few minutes each day. They hope it will ease worry, help them sleep, or calm a busy mind. A doctor is often asked: does it really work?
The honest answer has two parts. Yes, it helps some things a little. And it is not a medicine.
The largest review we have
In 2014 a team at Johns Hopkins University in the United States gathered all the good trials of meditation they could find. They looked through more than 18,000 reports. They kept 47 trials, with 3,515 people in all. These people had different illnesses and problems, and each trial compared meditation with some other kind of care.
What did they find? Mindfulness meditation, taught as a programme over about eight weeks, gave small to moderate relief from anxiety, from low mood, and from pain. The effects were modest. For stress and quality of life the evidence was weaker. For sleep, attention, eating habits, weight and substance use, they could not say that meditation helped.
What it does not show
The same review found no proof that meditation worked better than other treatments, such as medicines, exercise or other talking therapies.
So meditation is not a replacement for any of them. If you have anxiety or low mood that spoils your days, or you cannot sleep for weeks, please see a doctor. Meditation can sit beside the treatment. It should not stand in for it.
Why it may help
Nobody can say for certain why it helps. One simple idea is this. When you worry, the mind runs ahead to things that have not happened. Meditation trains you to notice that and come back to now, again and again. With practice, the worry loses some of its grip.
This is an idea, not a proven fact. But it matches what many people say when they have practised for some weeks.
A fair way to see it
Think of meditation like a daily walk. A walk does not cure disease. But for most people it does some good, it costs nothing, and the habit is worth keeping. Expect that sort of benefit, a little at a time, and you will not be disappointed.
