Why this page
Many of us use these words loosely. Someone says “I meditated for an hour” and means they did japa. Another says “we did a pooja” and means only an abhisheka. Nobody is wrong to speak this way at home. But when you want to begin a practice, it helps to know which is which.
This page gives the common meaning of each word in plain language. Families and traditions differ in the details, so take it as a general guide, not a rulebook.
A simple test
Ask what you are doing. If you are repeating words, it is japa. If you are holding your attention steady on one thing, it is dhyana. If you are offering things with your hands, it is pooja. If you are reading a sacred text from beginning to end, it is parayana.
Mantra
A mantra is a word, a name or a short verse, usually in Sanskrit, that is repeated or chanted. Om, “Om Namah Shivaya” and the Gayatri are well known. Some families receive a mantra from a teacher or an elder. Others use the name of a God they love.
Japa
Japa is the repeating of a mantra, again and again, usually counted on a mala of 108 beads. Traditionally it is done in three ways: aloud, in a whisper where only the lips move, and silently in the mind. The counting gives the mind something to hold on to.
Japa is not the same as meditation, though it can help the mind to settle.

Nama smarana
Nama smarana means remembering a name of God, such as Rama, Krishna or Shiva, and saying it through the day. There are no beads and no fixed time. It is a light form of japa that can go along with walking, cooking or waiting in a queue.
Stotra
A stotra is a hymn in praise of a deity, in verse, recited or sung. The Vishnu Sahasranama and the Soundarya Lahari are well-known examples. A stotra is meant to be understood as well as said, so its meaning matters.
Parayana
Parayana is reading a sacred text right through, from beginning to end, with attention and often aloud. It is often done over a fixed number of days. The Bhagavad Gita and the Durga Saptashati are commonly read this way. The difference from a stotra is that parayana covers a long text and has a clear start and finish.
Read: Bhagavad Gita, all 18 chapters and Durga Saptashati.
Prarthana
Prarthana is prayer in your own words. You thank, ask, or simply tell God how the day went. There is no fixed form. This is what separates it from a mantra, whose words are fixed.
Dhyana
Dhyana is steady attention on one thing: the breath, a sound, the form of a deity, or the meaning of a verse. The mind is not blank. It wanders, and you bring it back, again and again, until the attention begins to flow smoothly.
Chapter 6 of the Bhagavad Gita speaks at length about how to sit and how to steady the mind.

Dharana and samadhi
These two come from the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Dharana is holding the attention on one place or object. Dhyana is when that attention flows without a break. Samadhi is complete absorption. They are three stages of one thread. A beginner works mostly at the first.
Pranayama
Pranayama is the guiding of the breath: slow breathing, counted breathing, breathing through alternate nostrils. It is not meditation, but it is a good way to quiet the body before you sit. If you have a heart or lung condition, or you are pregnant, ask your doctor before trying any forceful breathing.
Upasana
Upasana means, literally, sitting near. It is devoted practice directed to a chosen deity or ideal. It is a wide word, and it can include japa, dhyana and pooja.
Pooja
Pooja is worship with offerings. You invite the deity, offer a seat, water, flowers, incense, a lamp and food (naivedya), and end with the aarti. The full form has sixteen steps, called shodashopachara. The short form at home may be only a lamp, a flower and a prayer.
The difference from japa and dhyana is that pooja is an act of the hands as well as of the mind.
Archana
Archana is offering flowers, leaves or kumkum while saying the names of the deity, often 108 names (ashtottara) or a thousand (sahasranama). It is a part of pooja. In temples a priest may do it for you, saying your name.
Abhisheka
Abhisheka is the ritual bath of the deity’s image or lingam. Water, and often milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar (panchamrita), are poured slowly while mantras are chanted, for example the Rudram for Shiva. It is one part of a pooja, done on special days. It is not another word for pooja.
Aarti
Aarti is waving a lit lamp, of camphor or ghee, before the deity at the end of a pooja, usually with a song. The flame is then shown to everyone present.
Homa
Homa, also called havana or yajna, is offering ghee, grain and other substances into a sacred fire while mantras are chanted. It is usually done by a priest on occasions such as entering a new house or a wedding.
Vrata
A vrata is a vow kept for a day or a season. It may mean fasting or simple food, a special pooja, and the reading of the story of the vrata. Pradosha vrata and Varalakshmi vrata are examples.
Read: Pradosha Vrata.
Sankalpa
A sankalpa is a stated resolve. Before a pooja or japa, you say what you are about to do, on which day, and for what purpose. It is also useful in daily life: “I will do one mala every morning for forty days” is a sankalpa. Saying it aloud makes it firmer.
Read: Sankalpa.
Bhajan and kirtana
Bhajan and kirtana are devotional singing, alone or in a group. Kirtana usually has a lead singer who tells the praise or the story of God, with the others answering. Bhajan is simpler, with songs sung together. The line between them is thin, and many families use the words for any group singing.
A word on health
Japa, dhyana and breathing practices are the ones that have been studied most. The articles linked below say what the research shows and what it does not. Pooja, abhisheka and the rest are acts of devotion. They are not offered as treatment, and they do not need to be proved useful to matter to the people who do them.
You need not do all of these. Choose the one that suits you, do it a little each day, and let the others come in their time.
