ಮಲಯಭುವಿ ವಿರೂಢಃ: ಚಂದನದ ಜೊತೆ ಬೆಳೆದ ಬಿದಿರು ಪರಿಮಳ ಪಡೆಯದು

ಒಂದೇ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೇ ಹೊತ್ತು ಬೆಳೆದ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಒಂದೇ ರೀತಿ ಆಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ತಾಯಂದಿರು ಹೇಳುವುದನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಅದೇ ತತ್ವವನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಒಂದು ತೋಟದ ಚಿತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಟ್ಟು, ದುಷ್ಟರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅಚ್ಚರಿ ಬೇಡ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಮಲಯಭುವಿ (मलयभुवि, malayabhuvi) = ಮಲಯ ಭೂಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ (in the land of Malaya)
ವಿರೂಢಶ್ಚಂದನೇನಾಭಿವೃದ್ಧೋ (विरूढश्चन्दनेनाभिवृद्धो, virūḍhaścandanenābhivṛddho) = ಹುಟ್ಟಿ ಚಂದನದ ಜೊತೆ ಬೆಳೆದ (sprung up and grown along with sandal)
ನ (न, na) = ಇಲ್ಲ (not)
ಭಜತಿ (भजति, bhajati) = ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ (takes on)
ಕಿಲ (किल, kila) = ಅಲ್ಲವೇ (indeed)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಮಲಯ ಪರ್ವತದ ನೆಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿ ಚಂದನದ ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಬೆಳೆದರೂ ಬಿದಿರು ಚಂದನದ ಪರಿಮಳವನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಚಿತ್ರ ಏನೂ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಎಲ್ಲ ದೋಷಗಳ ಗಣಿಯಂತಿರುವ ದುಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಧುತೆಯ ಗಂಧದ ಒಂದು ಕಣವೂ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

A bamboo that has sprung up in the land of Malaya and grown beside sandal still does not take on the fragrance of sandal. There is nothing strange in this. In the wicked, who are mines of every fault, there is not a particle of the scent of goodness.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಮಲಯ ಪರ್ವತ ಚಂದನಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಎಂಬುದು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಕಾವ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣುವ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ಬಿದಿರೂ ಪರಿಮಳ ಪಡೆಯದು ಎಂದರೆ ಪರಿಸರ ಎಷ್ಟು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದಿದ್ದರೂ ಸಾಲದು ಎಂದು ಅರ್ಥ.

The Malaya hills are famed for sandal in Sanskrit poetry by convention. If even bamboo grown there takes no fragrance, then however good the surroundings, they are not enough.

ಸಾಧುತಾಗಂಧಲೇಶ ಎಂಬ ಸಮಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಂಧ ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಚಿತ್ರದ ಪರಿಮಳಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊಂದುತ್ತದೆ. ಒಂದೇ ಪದ ಎರಡು ಅರ್ಥದ ಸೇತುವೆಯಾಗಿದೆ.

In the compound sadhutagandhalesha the word gandha, scent, picks up the fragrance of the earlier image. One word serves as a bridge between the two parts.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವುದು ಮಾತ್ರದಿಂದ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವರಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಗುರುಗಳ ಬಳಿ ಇದ್ದೂ ಕಲಿಯದವರನ್ನು ನಾವು ನೋಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

Being in a good institution does not make everyone good. We have seen some who stayed beside good teachers and learnt nothing.

ಅದೇ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವರ ಸಂಗ ಕೆಟ್ಟದ್ದು ಎಂದು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಬಿದಿರಿನಂಥ ಗಟ್ಟಿ ಸ್ವಭಾವದವರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ.

This is not to say good company is useless. The verse speaks only of hard natures like the bamboo.
