Jagaddhatri Puja is the worship of Jagaddhatri, a form of Durga, kept in Bengal on the ninth day of bright Kartika, most of all at Chandannagar and Krishnanagar.
How it is kept
In Bengal, above all at Chandannagar and Krishnanagar, clay images of Jagaddhatri, four armed and seated on a lion over an elephant, are worshipped in homes and pandals. In many places the saptami, ashtami and navami pujas are all done on the one day of Navami. Chandannagar is known for its lighting and its night procession at the immersion.
The story
Jagaddhatri, “she who holds the world”, is a form of Durga. Bengali tradition links her to the Kena Upanishad story in which the gods grew proud after a victory and the Goddess, as Uma, showed them that their strength was hers. King Krishnachandra of Nadia is credited with making her puja widespread in the eighteenth century.
Which day Anudina gives
Anudina gives the day on which Kartika shukla navami, the ninth tithi of the bright fortnight of Kartika, is running at sunrise. The tithi is tested at the sunrise of the reader’s own place, so the day can differ between cities.
It is kept in Bengal. Anudina shows it under the North Indian custom, and under the South Indian custom only when “Show festivals of other regions too” is turned on. A reader who ticks the Shakta lineage in the Tradition sheet sees it too, wherever they are.
The rule was compared with 31 October 2025 and, for Kolkata, 7 November 2027 (Drik Panchang). For 2026 Drik Panchang gives 19 November at Kolkata and 18 November at Delhi.
