What japa is
Japa is the quiet repeating of a mantra. A name of God, a few syllables, a line you learnt as a child. You say it aloud or softly inside, and then you say it again.
Most people count it on a mala. A mala usually has 108 beads, one for each repetition. When you reach the large bead at the end, you have finished a round.
Counting looks like a small thing. It is not. The bead gives your fingers something to do. It tells you where you are. And it gives the practice an end, which is a kindness when the mind is tired.
What the mind does
Sit for a minute and try to think of nothing. It does not work. The mind jumps to a bill, a child, lunch.
Japa does not ask you to think of nothing. It gives the mind one small job: say the mantra. When you notice you have wandered, and you will, come back to the next bead. No scolding. The coming back is the practice.
What the body does
In 2001 a team in Italy, led by Dr Luciano Bernardi, tested something very close to japa. Twenty-three healthy adults recited either an Ave Maria in Latin or a yoga mantra. The team measured their breathing, their heart rhythm and their blood pressure.
When the words were said about six times a minute, one slow breath for each recitation, the natural waves of heart rate and blood pressure lined up with the breathing and grew stronger. The body’s pressure-control reflex, called baroreflex sensitivity, also rose, from 9.5 to 11.5 units. The authors called these favourable effects, and said they were possibly physical as well as mental.
Now the limits. It was a small study. The people were healthy, and they sat in a laboratory for a short time. It does not show that japa treats high blood pressure, or any illness. What it shows is smaller, and still worth knowing: the body answers slow, steady repetition in a way that can be measured.
A way to begin
Choose one mantra, the one you already know. Sit with your back supported.
Say it slowly, about one mantra for each easy breath. Do not force the breath, and do not hold it. If you feel dizzy, stop and breathe normally.
Start with one round of 108. When the large bead comes, stop. Sit for a moment before you get up.
To keep the count of beads, you can use an app such as Abhyasa.
One caution. Japa is a practice, not a treatment. If you take medicines for your heart, pressure or sugar, keep taking them. Chest pain, breathlessness or fainting need a doctor, not another round.
A bead, a breath, a word. Then the next bead.
