- ಕಣ್ಠಗತೇ (कण्ठगते, kaṇṭhagate) = ಕಂಠಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದು ನಿಂತಿರುವಾಗ (when it has come up to the throat)
- ಸೂಕ್ತೇ (सूक्ते, sūkte) = ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಪದ್ಯ (a well made verse)
- ದುಃಖಾಸಿಕಾ (दुःखासिका, duḥkhāsikā) = ಕುಳಿತಲ್ಲೇ ಸಂಕಟ (the misery of sitting)

- ಯಾವತ್ (यावत्, yāvat) = ಎಷ್ಟು ಕಾಲದವರೆಗೆ (until such time as)
When a well made verse has come up to the poet’s throat, it is a misery to him, exactly as the breath of life is when it reaches the throat. The misery lasts until the arrival of someone who can take it in, an arrival that opens the poet’s eyes wide.
About this subhashita
Kanthagata prana, the breath at the throat, is the settled phrase for a man at the point of death: unable to leave, unable to stay. Giving an unspoken verse that same comparison is a strong stroke.
Duhkhasika is an exact word. Asika is sitting. Duhkhasika is not being able to sit still. It holds the poet’s restlessness in one word.
Sachetana means one who has consciousness in him. There are people all round. What the verse asks for is the arrival of one who is awake. The complaint of this whole section is plain here.

For life today
After you have worked a case out properly there is a pressure to tell someone. One person who listens and then asks a question is enough, and the verse says the same: one is enough.
The complaint that other people are not following can sometimes be a fault on the speaker’s side. It is worth reading the verse remembering that it speaks from the poet’s side of the room.
