Press it hard enough and one might get oil even out of sand. A man worn down by thirst might even drink water in a mirage. Wandering long enough, one might at some time come upon a hare’s horn. But one cannot win over the mind of an obstinately foolish man.

About this subhashita

Shashavishana, the hare’s horn, is the traditional Indian logical example of a thing that does not exist at all. Not a difficult thing, a nonexistent one. The verse brings in that word and then places the fool’s mind below it.

Inside the word mrigatrishnika is a deer’s thirst. The deer sees water in the distance, runs, and the water withdraws. In the same line the drinker is himself called pipasardita, tormented by thirst, and that pairing is worth noticing.

This verse and the one before carry the same last line, and both are in the Prithvi metre. Read as a pair, the first takes up things that are dangerous and the second things that do not exist. Both verses are also found in Bhartrihari’s Nitishataka.

For life today

With someone who has decided beforehand against a medicine, it is better to ask what they will accept and begin there than to make the same argument ten times. The verse is not asking anyone to accept defeat. It only says to stop knocking at one door.

Seen from the other side this is a mirror for us too. Asking whether other people meet the same wall in us is hard, and useful.
