About this subhashita
Vashyata is the state of being under another’s control. Elation and dejection appear here like rulers who take the mind into their power.
The verse does not say there should be no feeling. It says only that the mind should not be taken over by it. The difference, joy and sorrow come but the mind does not go with them, is a fine one.

Whether the news is good or bad, we can practise pausing for a breath before reacting. That moment of pause tends to improve the next decision.
If a doctor’s mind wavers before a patient, the patient’s courage dips too. Yet hiding all feeling is not right either, and a weighted steadiness should go together with compassion.
