Mahalaya Paksha begins on the first day of the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada, the day of the pratipada shraddha, when the fortnight set aside for the ancestors opens.
How it is kept
From today until Mahalaya Amavasya the fortnight is set aside for the ancestors. On the day that matches the tithi of a parent’s or grandparent’s death, the family offers tarpana and a shraddha, or feeds Brahmins and the needy in their name, and many offer sesame and water every day. New purchases and auspicious beginnings are usually put off until the fortnight ends.
The story
The dark fortnight of Bhadrapada is the Pitru Paksha, when the ancestors are said to come close to their descendants and wait for their offerings. A well known story tells that Karna, who had given gold all his life but never food, was offered only gold in the other world, and was allowed to return for this fortnight to offer food and water to his forefathers.
Which day Anudina gives
Anudina gives the pratipada shraddha day of the Mahalaya fortnight, the first day of the fortnight, worked out with the other Mahalaya rows. The row is shown in the calendar, the lists and Coming up; on the Today screen it is left out, because the Mahalaya rows already say which day of the fortnight it is.
It is kept across India, so Anudina shows it under both customs.
The rule was compared with 16 September 2027 (the Ontikoppal panchanga of Mysuru). That is the only dated source found. The fortnight itself and its days are on the pages of the other Mahalaya rows.
