It is the hearts of good men alone that are hard, so I reckon. For the sharp arrows that are a bad man’s words do not pierce them in the least.
About this subhashita
Kathina, hard, is normally a fault. Here it is used as a virtue. Lifting one word from an insult into a compliment is the trick of this verse.
Vishikha is an arrow. In khalavagvishikha the bad man’s words are themselves the arrows. An arrow needs something soft to go into. So calling the unpierced heart hard follows quite logically.
With me matiḥ the verse calls its own claim merely its reckoning. Offering it as a surmise rather than a pronouncement gives the line a light touch of humour.

For life today
Today it is easy to read one nasty line about oneself over and over all day. Looking once at who wrote it settles how much it weighs.
An angry word from a patient’s relative does not need an answer on the spot. But hard does not mean deaf. Where the complaint has a true part in it, that part should be separated out and taken.
