ಕವೀಶ್ವರಾಣಾಂ ವಚಸಾ ವಿನೋದೈಃ: ಚಂದ್ರಕಾಂತ ಶಿಲೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಕರಗುತ್ತದೆ

ಚಂದ್ರನ ಬೆಳಕು ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಲ್ಲುಗಳ ಮೇಲೂ ಬೀಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಕರಗುವುದು ಚಂದ್ರಕಾಂತ ಶಿಲೆ ಮಾತ್ರ.

ಆ ಪುರಾಣದ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಕಾವ್ಯದ ಕೇಳುಗರಿಗೆ ಅನ್ವಯಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಕವೀಶ್ವರಾಣಾಂ ವಚಸಾ ವಿನೋದೈ-
ರ್ನನ್ದನ್ತಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾನಿಧಯೋ ನ ಚಾನ್ಯೇ ।
ಚನ್ದ್ರೋಪಲಾ ಏವ ಕರೈರ್ಹಿಮಾಂಶೋ-
ರ್ಮಧ್ಯೇ ಶಿಲಾನಾಂ ಸರಸಾ ಭವನ್ತಿ ॥

कवीश्वराणां वचसा विनोदै-
र्नन्दन्ति विद्यानिधयो न चान्ये ।
चन्द्रोपला एव करैर्हिमांशो-
र्मध्ये शिलानां सरसा भवन्ति ॥

rnandanti vidyānidhayo na cānye |
candropalā eva karairhimāṃśo-
rmadhye śilānāṃ sarasā bhavanti ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಕವೀಶ್ವರಾಣಾಮ್ (कवीश्वराणाम्, kavīśvarāṇām) = ಕವಿಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠರ (of the lords among poets)
ವಚಸಾ ವಿನೋದೈಃ (वचसा विनोदैः, vacasā vinodaiḥ) = ಮಾತಿನ ವಿನೋದಗಳಿಂದ (by the delights of their speech)
ನನ್ದನ್ತಿ (नन्दन्ति, nandanti) = ಆನಂದಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ (are gladdened)
ವಿದ್ಯಾನಿಧಯಃ (विद्यानिधयः, vidyānidhayaḥ) = ವಿದ್ಯೆಯ ನಿಧಿಗಳಾದವರು (those who are treasuries of learning)
ನ ಚ ಅನ್ಯೇ (न च अन्ये, na ca anye) = ಬೇರೆಯವರಲ್ಲ (and not others)
ಚನ್ದ್ರೋಪಲಾಃ ಏವ (चन्द्रोपलाः एव, candropalāḥ eva) = ಚಂದ್ರಕಾಂತ ಶಿಲೆಗಳು ಮಾತ್ರ (only the moonstones)
ಕರೈಃ ಹಿಮಾಂಶೋಃ (करैः हिमांशोः, karaiḥ himāṃśoḥ) = ಚಂದ್ರನ ಕಿರಣಗಳಿಂದ (by the rays of the cool rayed one)
ಮಧ್ಯೇ ಶಿಲಾನಾಮ್ (मध्ये शिलानाम्, madhye śilānām) = ಕಲ್ಲುಗಳ ನಡುವೆ (among stones)
ಸರಸಾಃ ಭವನ್ತಿ (सरसाः भवन्ति, sarasāḥ bhavanti) = ರಸವುಳ್ಳವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ (grow moist)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಕವಿಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠರ ಮಾತಿನ ವಿನೋದಗಳಿಂದ ಆನಂದಿಸುವವರು ವಿದ್ಯೆಯ ನಿಧಿಗಳಾದವರು ಮಾತ್ರ, ಬೇರೆಯವರಲ್ಲ. ಕಲ್ಲುಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಚಂದ್ರನ ಕಿರಣಗಳಿಂದ ಕರಗುವುದು ಚಂದ್ರಕಾಂತ ಶಿಲೆಗಳು ಮಾತ್ರ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

It is the treasuries of learning who are gladdened by the delights of great poets’ speech, and not others. Among all stones it is only the moonstones that grow moist under the rays of the moon.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಚಂದ್ರೋಪಲ ಅಥವಾ ಚಂದ್ರಕಾಂತ ಎಂಬ ಶಿಲೆ ಚಂದ್ರನ ಬೆಳಕಿಗೆ ಕರಗಿ ನೀರು ಸುರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಕಾವ್ಯದ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಕಲ್ಪನೆ. ಸೂರ್ಯಕಾಂತ ಶಿಲೆ ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಬೆಳಕಿಗೆ ಬೆಂಕಿ ಹೊತ್ತಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಅದರ ಜೊತೆಗಾರ ಕಲ್ಪನೆ.

That the chandrakanta stone melts and drips under moonlight is a familiar conceit of Sanskrit poetry. Its companion is the suryakanta stone, which catches fire in sunlight.

ಈ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ದೂರು ಚಂದ್ರನ ಮೇಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಬೆಳಕು ಎಲ್ಲರ ಮೇಲೂ ಸಮನಾಗಿ ಬೀಳುತ್ತದೆ, ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ ಇರುವುದು ಕಲ್ಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ.

In this comparison the moon is not blamed. The light falls equally on all; the difference lies in the stone.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಒಂದೇ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿ ಒಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಅನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ, ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ಏನೂ ಅನ್ನಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ ಕೇಳುಗನ ಸಿದ್ಧತೆಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

One and the same sentence means much to one listener and nothing to another. The difference lies in the listener’s preparation.

ಸಿದ್ಧತೆ ಎಂದರೆ ಪದವಿಯಲ್ಲ. ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಓದು, ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸಮಯ, ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಗಮನ. ಇಷ್ಟು ಇದ್ದರೆ ಯಾರೂ ಚಂದ್ರಕಾಂತ ಶಿಲೆಯಾಗಬಹುದು.

Preparation here does not mean a degree. A little reading, a little time, a little attention. With that much anyone can become a moonstone.
