ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸ ಎಂದರೆ ಯಾರು ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗೆ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಒಂದು ಪಟ್ಟಿಯನ್ನು ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಆ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಓದು ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದೇ ಅದರ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಮಾತು.

ಸತ್ಯಂ ತಪೋ ಜ್ಞಾನಮಹಿಂಸತಾ ಚ
ವಿದ್ವತ್ಪ್ರಣಾಮಶ್ಚ ಸುಶೀಲತಾ ಚ ।
ಏತಾನಿ ಯೋ ಧಾರಯತೇ ಸ ವಿದ್ವಾ-
ನ್ನ ಕೇವಲಂ ಯಃ ಪಠತೇ ಸ ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

सत्यं तपो ज्ञानमहिंसता च
विद्वत्प्रणामश्च सुशीलता च ।
एतानि यो धारयते स विद्वा-
न्न केवलं यः पठते स विद्वान् ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

satyaṃ tapo jñānamahiṃsatā ca
vidvatpraṇāmaśca suśīlatā ca |
etāni yo dhārayate sa vidvā-
nna kevalaṃ yaḥ paṭhate sa vidvān ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಸತ್ಯಮ್ (सत्यम्, satyam) = ಸತ್ಯ (truth)
ತಪಃ (तपः, tapaḥ) = ತಪಸ್ಸು (austerity)
ಜ್ಞಾನಮ್ (ज्ञानम्, jñānam) = ಜ್ಞಾನ (knowledge)
ಅಹಿಂಸತಾ ಚ (अहिंसता च, ahiṃsatā ca) = ಮತ್ತು ಹಿಂಸೆ ಮಾಡದಿರುವುದು (and not doing harm)
ವಿದ್ವತ್ಪ್ರಣಾಮಃ ಚ (विद्वत्प्रणामः च, vidvatpraṇāmaḥ ca) = ತಿಳಿದವರಿಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ (reverence to the learned)
ಸುಶೀಲತಾ ಚ (सुशीलता च, suśīlatā ca) = ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ನಡವಳಿಕೆ (and good conduct)
ಏತಾನಿ ಯಃ ಧಾರಯತೇ (एतानि यः धारयते, etāni yaḥ dhārayate) = ಇವನ್ನು ಯಾರು ಧರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೋ (he who holds these)
ಸಃ ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ (सः विद्वान्, saḥ vidvān) = ಅವನು ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸ (he is the learned man)
ನ ಕೇವಲಮ್ ಯಃ ಪಠತೇ ಸಃ ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ (न केवलम् यः पठते सः विद्वान्, na kevalam yaḥ paṭhate saḥ vidvān) = ಓದಿದ ಮಾತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾರೂ ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸನಲ್ಲ (not merely he who reads is learned)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಸತ್ಯ, ತಪಸ್ಸು, ಜ್ಞಾನ, ಹಿಂಸೆ ಮಾಡದಿರುವುದು, ತಿಳಿದವರಿಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ, ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ನಡವಳಿಕೆ. ಇವನ್ನು ಯಾರು ಧರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೋ ಅವನು ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸ. ಬರೀ ಓದಿದವನು ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸನಲ್ಲ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Truth, austerity, knowledge, doing no harm, reverence for the learned, and good conduct: he who holds these is a learned man. He who merely reads is not.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಧಾರಯತೇ ಎಂಬ ಪದವನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಬೇಕು. ತಿಳಿಯುವುದು ಅಲ್ಲ, ಧರಿಸುವುದು. ಬಟ್ಟೆಯನ್ನು ಧರಿಸುವಂತೆ ಗುಣವನ್ನೂ ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ಧರಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ಚಿತ್ರ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

The word dharayate is worth noticing. Not knowing but wearing. It carries the picture of putting on a virtue daily as one puts on clothes.

ಈ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಒಂದು ಅಂಶ ಮಾತ್ರ, ಆರರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು. ಉಳಿದ ಐದೂ ನಡವಳಿಕೆಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದವು.

In this list knowledge is only one item out of six. The other five are all matters of conduct.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಪದವಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಮಾಣಪತ್ರ ಬೇಕು, ಆದರೆ ಅವು ಸಾಲದು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ವೃತ್ತಿಯ ನಡವಳಿಕೆಯೂ ವೃತ್ತಿಯ ಭಾಗ.

Degrees and certificates are needed, but the verse reminds us they are not enough. Conduct is part of a profession too.

ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಅಂಕಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಳುವಷ್ಟೇ ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ ನಡವಳಿಕೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೂ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದರೆ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಪಾಠ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.

If we speak to children about conduct as naturally as we ask about marks, this verse stays alive in the house.
