ಸ್ಥಿರಾ ಶೈಲೀ ಗುಣವತಾ: ಬಿರುಗಾಳಿಗೂ ಆರದ ರತ್ನದೀಪ

ಎಣ್ಣೆಯ ದೀಪವನ್ನು ಗಾಳಿ ಆರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ರತ್ನದ ಹೊಳಪನ್ನು ಆರಿಸಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಗುಣವಂತನ ನಡೆ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಬಗೆಯದು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತದೆ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ.

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಸ್ಥಿರಾ ಶೈಲೀ ಗುಣವತಾ ಖಲಬುದ್ಧ್ಯಾ ನ ಬಾಧ್ಯತೇ ।
ರತ್ನದೀಪಸ್ಯ ಹಿ ಶಿಖಾ ವಾತ್ಯಯಾಪಿ ನ ನಾಶ್ಯತೇ ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

स्थिरा शैली गुणवता खलबुद्ध्या न बाध्यते ।
रत्नदीपस्य हि शिखा वात्ययापि न नाश्यते ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

sthirā śailī guṇavatā khalabuddhyā na bādhyate |
ratnadīpasya hi śikhā vātyayāpi na nāśyate ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಸ್ಥಿರಾ (स्थिरा, sthirā) = ಸ್ಥಿರವಾದದ್ದು (steady)
ಶೈಲೀ (शैली, śailī) = ನಡೆ, ರೀತಿ (the way, the manner)
ಗುಣವತಾ (गुणवता, guṇavatā) = ಗುಣವಂತರ (of those with worth)
ಖಲಬುದ್ಧ್ಯಾ (खलबुद्ध्या, khalabuddhyā) = ದುಷ್ಟನ ಬುದ್ಧಿಯಿಂದ (by the mind of a wicked man)
ನ ಬಾಧ್ಯತೇ (न बाध्यते, na bādhyate) = ತೊಂದರೆಗೆ ಒಳಗಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (is not disturbed)
ರತ್ನದೀಪಸ್ಯ ಹಿ (रत्नदीपस्य हि, ratnadīpasya hi) = ರತ್ನದ ದೀಪದ (of a lamp that is a jewel)
ಶಿಖಾ (शिखा, śikhā) = ಜ್ವಾಲೆ (the flame)
ವಾತ್ಯಯಾ ಅಪಿ (वात्यया अपि, vātyayā api) = ಬಿರುಗಾಳಿಯಿಂದಲೂ (even by a gale)
ನ ನಾಶ್ಯತೇ (न नाश्यते, na nāśyate) = ನಾಶವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (is not put out)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಗುಣವಂತರ ನಡೆ ಸ್ಥಿರವಾದದ್ದು, ದುಷ್ಟನ ಬುದ್ಧಿಯಿಂದ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ತೊಂದರೆಯಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ರತ್ನದ ದೀಪದ ಬೆಳಕನ್ನು ಬಿರುಗಾಳಿಯೂ ಆರಿಸಲಾರದು.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

The way of those with worth is steady; it is not disturbed by a wicked mind. The flame of a lamp that is a jewel is not put out even by a gale.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ರತ್ನದೀಪ ಎಂದರೆ ರತ್ನವನ್ನೇ ದೀಪವಾಗಿ ಇಟ್ಟದ್ದು. ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಕಾವ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅರಮನೆಗಳ ವರ್ಣನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಪದೇ ಪದೇ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಎಣ್ಣೆಯೂ ಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ, ಬತ್ತಿಯೂ ಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ.

A ratnadipa is a jewel set to serve as a lamp, an image that recurs in Sanskrit descriptions of palaces. It needs neither oil nor wick.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದಲೇ ಈ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ ಬಿಗಿಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಹೊರಗಿನಿಂದ ಬಂದ ಬೆಂಕಿಯನ್ನು ಗಾಳಿ ಆರಿಸಬಹುದು. ಒಳಗಿನಿಂದಲೇ ಬರುವ ಬೆಳಕನ್ನು ಆರಿಸಲಾಗದು.

That is what makes the comparison tight. Wind can put out a fire that was brought from outside; it cannot put out a light that comes from within.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಸ್ವಂತ ನಿಲುವು ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ ಬೇರೆಯವರ ಮಾತು ಕಡಿಮೆ ತಟ್ಟುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ನಿಲುವು ಎಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದೇ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ.

When one’s own footing is firm, other people’s words touch less. The question is where that footing comes from.

ಬೇರೆಯವರ ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆಯಿಂದ ಮಾತ್ರ ಬಲ ಪಡೆದವನಿಗೆ ಅವರ ಟೀಕೆಯೂ ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಬಲವಾಗಿ ತಟ್ಟುತ್ತದೆ. ಎಣ್ಣೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊರಗಿನಿಂದ ಪಡೆದ ದೀಪ ಗಾಳಿಗೆ ಆರುತ್ತದೆ.

One who draws strength only from others’ praise is struck just as hard by their criticism. A lamp fed from outside goes out in the wind.
