Godhuli is the short period around sunset, usually reckoned as about twenty-four minutes on either side of it. The word means “cow dust”: the hour when the cattle come home and raise dust on the village paths.
It is one of the few time divisions in the panchanga whose name records an ordinary observation rather than a calculation, and it is the more evocative for it.
Why it is auspicious
Godhuli is counted among the favourable periods, and is specifically recommended for marriage. Several traditions in North India and Gujarat hold the wedding ceremony at the Godhuli lagna, and where a fully auspicious muhurta cannot be found in a given season, Godhuli is accepted as sufficient on its own.
The reasoning given in the texts is that the junction between day and night is a sandhya, a joining, and that unions made at a joining hold. The practical reading is simpler: it is the hour when the work of the day is done, the household is gathered and the light is kind.
The sandhyas
Godhuli belongs to a wider idea. The junctions of the day, sunrise, noon and sunset, are the three sandhyas, and the daily recitation of the Gayatri is prescribed at each. Sandhya periods are considered unsuitable for eating, for sleeping and for study, and suitable for prayer.
The evening sandhya and Godhuli overlap but are not identical: the sandhya is the junction itself, Godhuli a slightly wider window around it.
In the app
Anudina prints Godhuli as a period straddling the computed sunset for your town, so it moves through the year as sunset does. It is marked neither favourable nor unfavourable in the colour coding, because its character depends entirely on what is being done in it.
