Bhagini Hasta Bhojana

The second tithi of Kartika, on which a brother takes his midday meal at his sister house. Bhai Dooj in the North, Bhau Beej in Maharashtra.

Bhagini Hasta Bhojana is the Karnataka name for the second tithi of the bright fortnight of Kartika, and it says exactly what the day consists of: eating from the sister’s hand. A brother goes to his sister’s house, is received, served and sent away with a blessing. It is the last day of the Deepavali sequence.

The same day is Bhai Dooj or Bhaiya Dooj in North India, Bhau Beej in Maharashtra, Bhai Phonta in Bengal, Bhai Tika in Nepal and Yama Dwitiya in the Sanskrit sources. The Kannada name is the plainest of them, because it names the meal rather than the relationship.

When it falls

The reference moment is madhyahna, the middle of the day: the third of the five equal parts into which the interval from sunrise to sunset is divided. The day during whose madhyahna Dwitiya is running carries the observance.

The reason follows from the rite. The whole of the day is a meal, and a meal of this kind is a midday one, so the tithi has to be running when the brother sits down to eat. A day on which Dwitiya begins in the late afternoon does not serve, however much of the evening it occupies. This is the same principle that puts a shraddha in aparahna and a Lakshmi Puja in pradosha, applied to a third part of the day, and it is why the day can differ from a calendar that prints only sunrise tithis.

What is done

The sister prepares the meal, receives her brother at the door, performs aarati, applies tilaka to his forehead and feeds him. He gives her a gift, usually cloth or money, and the obligation implied is not for the day but for life: the tradition behind the custom is that a brother is the one a woman can turn to in her married household. Where a woman has no brother, a cousin or a neighbour’s son stands in, and where a man has no sister, the daughter of an uncle does.

The observance is warmly kept in Maharashtra and across the North, and more quietly in Karnataka, where many families know the day and do not mark it with much ceremony. Bengal makes rather more of it, with a sandalwood mark on the forehead and a formal recitation of long life.

The story

Yama, the god of death, visited his sister Yamuna on this day after a long absence. She received him, fed him and marked his forehead, and he offered her a boon. She asked that any brother who received such a welcome from his sister on this day should not fear death, and the day takes its Sanskrit name, Yama Dwitiya, from the visit. Bathing in the Yamuna at Mathura is held to be especially fitting, and the ghat there is crowded on the day.

Not to be confused with

Raksha Bandhan, in the bright fortnight of Shravana, is the other brother and sister observance of the year, and the direction of the rite is reversed: there the sister ties a thread on the brother’s wrist and the brother undertakes to protect her. Here the sister feeds and blesses and the brother comes to her. They are two distinct days about three months apart, and only one of them involves a thread.
