ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
May this salutation of mine reach Shiva and Shivaa, the pair who are the form of all the arts, who wear the digit of the moon as an ornament on their crest, who are each the fruit of the other’s austerity, and who make the reward plain to their devotees. It is offered to the two who bring abundant blessing to the three worlds, who arise again and again in the heart, and who are known as a throb of bliss.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 1ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 1
The Shivananda Lahari is a hymn of a hundred verses to Shiva, which tradition ascribes to Adi Shankaracharya. Like many Shaiva hymns, it opens by saluting Shiva and Parvati together rather than Shiva alone. The first verse of Kalidasa’s Raghuvamsha likewise salutes Parvati and Parameshvara, joined like word and meaning, as the parents of the world. Behind this paired salutation lies the conviction that Shiva and Shakti are not two separate things.
Every epithet in the verse ends in -abhyam, the dative dual, meaning “to the two”. In shivabhyam the grammatical rule of ekashesha (one word standing for a pair) is at work: just as the single word pitarau means father and mother together, shivau means Shiva and Shivaa together. So every epithet, wearing the moon’s digit, being the fruit of austerity, applies to both. The story of Parvati’s austerity to win Shiva is well known. Many read the verse as saying that each is the fruit of the other’s tapas.
The charm of this verse lies in its sound. In each line the same cluster of syllables returns with a different sense: kalabhyam and shashikalabhyam, phalabhyam and prakatitaphalabhyam, shivabhyam and tribhuvanashivabhyam, bhavabhyam and anubhavabhyam. This is the figure called yamaka, a sound ornament in which the same group of syllables recurs with a new meaning. The first kala is art, the second the digit of the moon. The first shiva is the god’s name, the second means blessing. Punarbhavabhyam can also be split as punah bhavabhyam: again, to Bhava and Bhavani.
The metre is shikharini: seventeen syllables to each quarter, with a pause for breath (yati) after the sixth. The opening verses keep to this metre. It is worth noting that most of the Saundarya Lahari is also in shikharini.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಅಡುಗೆಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಜೊತೆಯಾಗಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವಾಗ ಯಾರು ಯಾವ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿದರು ಎಂದು ಬೇರ್ಪಡಿಸುವುದು ಕಷ್ಟ. ಊಟ ಇಬ್ಬರದೂ ಆಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ.
When two people cook together in a kitchen, it is hard to say who did which part. The meal belongs to both.
This verse offers its salutation to a pair. In our own lives, too, most of what is good has been made by two or more together. When we give thanks, it is only fair to remember the partnership.
