ಸಹಸ್ರಂ ವರ್ತಂತೇ ಜಗತಿ ವಿಬುಧಾಃ ಕ್ಷುದ್ರಫಲದಾ
ನ ಮನ್ಯೇ ಸ್ವಪ್ನೇ ವಾ ತದನುಸರಣಂ ತತ್ಕೃತಫಲಮ್ ।
ಹರಿಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾದೀನಾಮಪಿ ನಿಕಟಭಾಜಾಮಸುಲಭಂ
ಚಿರಂ ಯಾಚೇ ಶಂಭೋ ಶಿವ ತವ ಪದಾಂಭೋಜಭಜನಮ್ ॥ 4 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
सहस्रं वर्तन्ते जगति विबुधाः क्षुद्रफलदा
न मन्ये स्वप्ने वा तदनुसरणं तत्कृतफलम् ।
हरिब्रह्मादीनामपि निकटभाजामसुलभं
चिरं याचे शम्भो शिव तव पदाम्भोजभजनम् ॥ 4 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (English IAST)
sahasraṃ vartante jagati vibudhāḥ kṣudraphaladā
na manye svapne vā tadanusaraṇaṃ tatkṛtaphalam |
haribrahmādīnāmapi nikaṭabhājāmasulabhaṃ
ciraṃ yāce śambho śiva tava padāmbhojabhajanam || 4 ||
ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಸಹಸ್ರಂ (सहस्रं, sahasraṃ) = ಸಾವಿರಾರು (thousands)
- ವರ್ತಂತೇ (वर्तन्ते, vartante) = ಇದ್ದಾರೆ (there are)
- ಜಗತಿ (जगति, jagati) = ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ (in the world)
- ವಿಬುಧಾಃ (विबुधाः, vibudhāḥ) = ದೇವತೆಗಳು (gods)
- ಕ್ಷುದ್ರಫಲದಾಃ (क्षुद्रफलदाः, kṣudraphaladāḥ) = ಸಣ್ಣಪುಟ್ಟ ಫಲಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಡುವವರು (who give petty rewards)
- ನ ಮನ್ಯೇ (न मन्ये, na manye) = ನಾನು ಲೆಕ್ಕಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಬಯಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (I do not care for)
- ಸ್ವಪ್ನೇ ವಾ (स्वप्ने वा, svapne vā) = ಕನಸಿನಲ್ಲಿಯೂ (even in a dream)
- ತದನುಸರಣಂ (तदनुसरणं, tadanusaraṇaṃ) = ಅವರನ್ನು ಹಿಂಬಾಲಿಸುವುದನ್ನು (following them)
- ತತ್ಕೃತಫಲಮ್ (तत्कृतफलम्, tatkṛtaphalam) = ಅವರು ಕೊಡುವ ಫಲವನ್ನು (the reward they bestow)
- ಹರಿಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾದೀನಾಮಪಿ (हरिब्रह्मादीनामपि, haribrahmādīnāmapi) = ಹರಿ, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಮೊದಲಾದವರಿಗೂ (even for Hari, Brahma and the rest)
- ನಿಕಟಭಾಜಾಮಸುಲಭಂ (निकटभाजामसुलभं, nikaṭabhājāmasulabhaṃ) = ಹತ್ತಿರದಲ್ಲಿರುವವರಿಗೂ ಸುಲಭವಲ್ಲದ (not easily gained even by those who stand near you)
- ಚಿರಂ (चिरं, ciraṃ) = ಬಹುಕಾಲದಿಂದ, ಸದಾ (long, for ever)
- ಯಾಚೇ (याचे, yāce) = ಬೇಡುತ್ತೇನೆ (I pray for)
- ಶಂಭೋ ಶಿವ (शम्भो शिव, śambho śiva) = ಶಂಭುವೇ, ಶಿವನೇ (O Shambhu, O Shiva)
- ತವ (तव, tava) = ನಿನ್ನ (your)
- ಪದಾಂಭೋಜಭಜನಮ್ (पदाम्भोजभजनम्, padāmbhojabhajanam) = ಪಾದಕಮಲಗಳ ಭಜನೆಯನ್ನು (the worship of your lotus feet)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಣ್ಣಪುಟ್ಟ ಫಲಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಡುವ ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಇದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅವರನ್ನು ಹಿಂಬಾಲಿಸುವುದನ್ನಾಗಲೀ ಅವರು ಕೊಡುವ ಫಲವನ್ನಾಗಲೀ ನಾನು ಕನಸಿನಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಬಯಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಶಂಭುವೇ, ಶಿವನೇ, ನಿನ್ನ ಹತ್ತಿರದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಹರಿ, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಮೊದಲಾದವರಿಗೂ ಸುಲಭವಲ್ಲದ ನಿನ್ನ ಪಾದಕಮಲಗಳ ಭಜನೆಯನ್ನೇ ನಾನು ಸದಾ ಬೇಡುತ್ತೇನೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
There are thousands of gods in the world who give petty rewards. Not even in a dream do I care to follow them or to have what they give. O Shambhu, O Shiva, what I pray for, and for ever, is the worship of your lotus feet, which is not easily gained even by Hari, Brahma and the others who stand near you.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 4ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 4
‘ವಿಬುಧ’ ಎಂಬ ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ಅಕ್ಷರಶಃ ತಿಳಿದವರು ಎಂದು ಅರ್ಥ. ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಕಾವ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೊಂದು ದೇವತೆಗಳ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಹೆಸರು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕವಿ ಕೇಳಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಕೊಡುವ ದೇವತೆಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರಾಕರಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಅವರು ಕೊಡುವ ಫಲ ‘ಕ್ಷುದ್ರ’, ಅಂದರೆ ಚಿಕ್ಕದು ಮತ್ತು ಬೇಗ ಮುಗಿಯುವಂಥದ್ದು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾನೆ.
Vibudha literally means the wise, and in Sanskrit poetry it is a common name for the gods. The poet does not deny that there are gods who grant what is asked. But what they give, he says, is kshudra: small and soon spent.
ಹರಿ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮರಿಗೂ ಶಿವನ ಪಾದ ಸುಲಭವಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ಮಾತು ಲಿಂಗೋದ್ಭವದ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಹಲವರು ಅರ್ಥೈಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವ ಅಗ್ನಿಸ್ತಂಭವಾಗಿ ನಿಂತಾಗ ವಿಷ್ಣು ವರಾಹನಾಗಿ ಅದರ ಬುಡವನ್ನೂ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಹಂಸನಾಗಿ ಅದರ ತುದಿಯನ್ನೂ ಹುಡುಕಿ ಕಾಣದೆ ಹಿಂದಿರುಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ‘ನಿಕಟಭಾಜಾಂ’, ಅಂದರೆ ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಹತ್ತಿರದವರಿಗೂ ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಆ ಸಮೀಪದ ನಡುವೆಯೂ ಇರುವ ಅಂತರವನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
Many read the line that even Hari and Brahma do not easily reach Shiva’s feet as a reminder of the story of the lingodbhava. In that story Shiva stands as a pillar of fire, and Vishnu as a boar seeks its base while Brahma as a swan seeks its top, and both return without finding it. Nikatabhajam, even for those near him, points to the distance that remains in spite of that nearness.
ಸ್ತೋತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ತುತಿಸುವ ದೇವರನ್ನು ಉಳಿದವರಿಗಿಂತ ಮೇಲೆ ಇಡುವುದು ಒಂದು ಕಾವ್ಯಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯ. ಪರಂಪರೆ ಶಂಕರರಿಗೆ ವಿಷ್ಣು, ದೇವಿ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಅನೇಕ ದೇವತೆಗಳ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರಗಳನ್ನೂ ಆರೋಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದ್ವೈತದ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಒಂದೇ ಪರಮತತ್ವದ ಹೆಸರುಗಳು. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಬೇರೆ ದೇವತೆಗಳ ನಿಂದೆ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ, ಭಕ್ತನ ಏಕನಿಷ್ಠೆಯ ಮಾತು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯುವುದು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸಮಂಜಸ.
It is a convention of hymns to place the god being praised above all others. Tradition also ascribes to Shankara hymns to Vishnu, the Devi and many other deities, and in the Advaita view all of these are names of the one highest reality. So it is fairer to read this verse as the devotee’s single-minded loyalty than as disparagement of other gods.
ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಕೊನೆಯ ಬೇಡಿಕೆ ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ. ಕವಿ ಯಾವುದೇ ಫಲವನ್ನು ಕೇಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ‘ಭಜನ’, ಅಂದರೆ ಪಾದಗಳ ಸೇವೆಯನ್ನೇ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಭಕ್ತಿಯೇ ಭಕ್ತಿಯ ಫಲ ಎಂಬ ನಿಲುವು ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ‘ಚಿರಂ’ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ‘ಬಹುಕಾಲದಿಂದ ಬೇಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ’ ಎಂದೂ ‘ಸದಾ ಇರುವಂತೆ ಬೇಡುತ್ತೇನೆ’ ಎಂದೂ ಅರ್ಥೈಸಬಹುದು. ಛಂದಸ್ಸು ಶಿಖರಿಣೀ.
The final request is worth noting. The poet asks for no reward at all. He asks only for bhajana, the service of the feet. The stance is that devotion is its own fruit. Chiram can mean either “I have long been asking” or “I ask that it last for ever”. The metre is shikharini.

ಫೋನಿನ ಪರದೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ದಿನವಿಡೀ ಸಣ್ಣಪುಟ್ಟ ಕೊಡುಗೆಗಳು ಬರುತ್ತಲೇ ಇರುತ್ತವೆ: ರಿಯಾಯಿತಿ, ಅಂಕ, ಹೊಸ ಸುದ್ದಿ. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದೂ ನಮ್ಮ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಗಮನವನ್ನು ಕೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.
All day the phone screen brings small offers: a discount, a score, a piece of news. Each asks for a little of our attention.
ಸಾವಿರ ಸಣ್ಣ ಫಲಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ನಮಗೆ ನಿಜವಾಗಿ ಬೇಕಾದ ಒಂದನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಸುಲಭವಲ್ಲ. ಅದನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸಿದಾಗ ಉಳಿದವುಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಡುವುದು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಹಗುರವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
Among a thousand small rewards, it is not easy to recognise the one thing we truly want. Once we do, letting the rest go becomes a little lighter.
