In the law books, in the learned disciplines, in medicine, in omens, poetry, song and eloquence, in the Puranas, in mantra, in praise, acting and humour, I have no skill. How then could kings take any pleasure in me? Who am I, O Pashupati? O all-knowing one, O lord, protect me, a mere creature, by your famed compassion.
Context and commentary on verse 5
In earlier times scholars and artists lived by royal patronage, and some learning or art was needed to please a king. Here the poet lists such skills and says he has none of them. So instead of the shelter of earthly kings he asks for the shelter of Pashupati. That a poet who wrote a hundred fine verses should call himself unskilled in poetry is the usual humility of the hymns.
The skills in the list are these. Smriti: the dharma texts such as the Manusmriti, the rules of conduct and law. Shastra: the learned disciplines such as grammar, logic and Mimamsa. Vaidya: Ayurveda, the art of recognising and treating illness, and the royal physician held a high place at court. Shakuna: reading the future from the cries of birds, the movements of animals and the like, which kings consulted before a battle or a journey.
Kavita: composing poetry. Gana: music. Phaniti: grace of speech, skill in composition. Some join it with the three words before it and read “in the telling of omens, poetry and song”. Purana: the art of the pauranika who recites the old stories. Mantra: besides the sacred formula of japa, it also means secret counsel given to a king, political advice, and in a verse about kings this second sense fits well. Stuti: praise of the king. Natana: drama and dance. Hasya: courtly wit, the art of the vidushaka or jester.
The last line plays on words. Shiva is Pashupati, lord of creatures, and the poet calls himself a pashu. In the everyday sense this means one without any learning. In the Shaiva sense it means the soul held in bonds. And there is a gentle argument hidden here: if I am a pashu, surely it is the duty of Pashupati to look after me. The address sarvajna, all-knowing, also carries weight: kings need a display of learning, but the one who knows everything does not. The metre is shikharini.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

The world measures us by what we can do. This verse offers the trust that there is a compassion which keeps us even when we can do nothing. That trust makes us gentler towards others as well.
