A pot or a lump of clay, an atom, smoke, fire and the mountain, a cloth or a thread: can any of these ward off dreadful Yama? In vain, and with such vehemence, you strain your throat with the words of logic. O wise one, worship the lotus feet of Shambhu and reach the highest happiness.
Context and commentary on verse 6
The objects in this verse are not chosen at random. They are the examples that come up again and again in the teaching of Nyaya (the school of logic and valid knowledge) and Vaisheshika (the school that classifies the constituents of the world). The lump of clay and the pot illustrate cause and effect: clay is the material cause, the stuff a thing is made of, and the pot is its effect. Thread and cloth raise the question of parts and whole: is a cloth merely a heap of threads, or a new thing that resides in them? Nyaya and Vaisheshika hold the second view, and they call this inseparable relation of whole to parts samavaya, inherence.
The atom is the paramanu of Vaisheshika: the smallest particle, invisible and indivisible, from whose combinations the things of the world are built. Smoke, fire and the mountain make up the famous example of anumana, inference, knowing the unseen from the seen: ‘There is fire on this mountain, because there is smoke. Wherever there is smoke there is fire, as in a kitchen.’ It is a careful answer from Indian thought to the question of how we may rightly know what we cannot see. The discipline of these schools shaped the method of argument in every later school.
So it would be wrong to read the verse as a rejection of reasoning itself. In his commentary on the Brahma Sutras, Shankara argues at length with Nyaya and Vaisheshika in the language of logic. The example of clay and pot is found in the Chandogya Upanishad itself. What Vedanta holds is that reasoning alone has no final footing, since one person’s argument can be overturned by another’s (‘tarkapratishthanat’, because reasoning has no firm ground, Brahma Sutra 2.1.11). What the poet objects to here is dry argument pursued for victory, which has nothing to offer in the face of death.
In ‘ghorashamana’, Shamana is a name of Yama, the god of death, listed among his names in the Amarakosha. The poet calls the debater ‘sudhih’, wise one. Some hear a touch of irony in this, but it can equally be read as respectful: your intellect is fine, so turn it the right way. The same thought appears in Bhaja Govindam, which tradition ascribes to Shankara: when death arrives, the rules of grammar will not save you. In the previous verse the poet said he was skilled in no branch of learning. Here he says that learning by itself does not set one free. The metre is shikharini, seventeen syllables to the line.

For life today
Arguments on a phone screen often go this way. One reply, then another, then another. The night passes, nobody’s mind has changed, and only the tiredness remains.
The verse does not ask us to stop thinking. It reminds us to pause once and ask where this argument is taking us, and whether it brings us what we really need.
