Human, god, beast of hill and forest, mosquito, cattle, worm, bird or whatever else: let the birth be any of these. If the heart is always absorbed in playing in the wave of supreme bliss that rises from remembering your lotus feet, what does that body here matter?

Context and commentary on verse 10

The verse mixes its list of creatures on purpose: the mosquito beside the god, the worm beside the human. In this way the poet unsettles the ladder of high and low that we imagine. What matters to him is where the heart inside that body finds its delight. The closing question, ‘kim tena vapusha’, what of that body, carries its own answer.

The word ‘paramanandalahari’ holds the very title of the work. Shivananda Lahari means the wave of bliss that comes from Shiva. Here the poet pictures the heart as a creature at play in those waves (‘vihara’ means play, roaming about). ‘Viharasakta’ means attached to that play: ‘asakti’, attachment, which elsewhere means bondage, becomes a word of praise here. The image also fits the river of Shiva’s stories in the second verse.

For Shaiva readers the word ‘pashutva’ carries a second sense. In Shaiva doctrine the pashu is the soul bound by the pasha, the noose of bondage, and the pati, its master, is Shiva. In the fifth verse the poet called himself ‘pashum mam’, me, a pashu. Some readers hear in this verse the suggestion that if the heart rests in Shiva, even that bound state holds no terror.

This is an ardent statement of devotion. It does not deny the doctrine of karma and rebirth, nor does it wish for an animal birth. Its feeling is that if remembrance remains, nothing else need worry us. Kulashekhara Alvar’s Mukundamala makes a similar prayer: whether in heaven, on earth or in hell, let me remember your feet. The next verse extends the same thought to the ashramas, the stages of life such as student, householder and renunciant. The metre is shikharini.

For life today

Sitting in a hospital corridor, we see bodies of every kind: in wheelchairs, on crutches, in a mother’s arms. What draws the eye there is less the shape of a body than the light in a face.

This does not mean neglecting the body: caring for it well is also our duty. But the verse quietly questions our habit of measuring a person’s worth by the form and abilities of their body.
