Just as the notion ‘silver’ arises in a mother-of-pearl shell, ‘gem’ in a piece of glass, ‘milk’ in water mixed with flour, and ‘water’ in a mirage, so the dull-witted person, mistaking it for God, worships what is other than you. O Pashupati, he does not hold you, the Great God and Lord, in his mind.

Context and commentary on verse 8

All four are familiar examples of illusion. The inner face of a shell gleams like silver in the light. A shard of glass sparkles like a gem. Water stirred with flour looks white like milk, and tradition recalls the Mahabharata episode in which Drona, in his poverty, had flour-water given to his son Ashvatthama as milk. ‘Mrigatrishna’ literally means ‘the deer’s thirst’: the name carries the picture of a thirsty deer running after the water that seems to shimmer in the distance.

The shell and the silver is one of the central images of Advaita Vedanta. At the start of his commentary on the Brahma Sutras, in the section on adhyasa (superimposition, seeing one thing as another), Shankara cites exactly this common experience: ‘a shell appears as silver’. What is really there is only the shell. The silver is an appearance, and the shell is untouched by it. In the same way, Advaita holds, multiplicity appears upon the one reality, Brahman.

It should be said honestly, though, that the verse turns the image in a somewhat different direction. In the section on adhyasa, the error is superimposing body, mind and the rest upon the Self. Here the error lies at the level of devotion: taking something limited for the Supreme. In the final view of Advaita all deities are forms of the one reality, so the verse need not be read as disparaging other gods. Many readers take ‘bhavadanyam’, what is other than you, to mean the things we raise to the place of God: money, power, reputation.

There is a fine point in these examples. The one who bends towards the shell really does want silver, and the thirst of the deer is real. What is mistaken is the object on which the longing settles. The verse can be read as granting that the seeker who worships elsewhere is also sincere. ‘Jadajana’ means one who does not notice, not one who is wicked. ‘Mani’ at the end of the first line and ‘rjale’ at the start of the second are joined by sandhi: manih jale. The metre is shikharini.

For life today

On a summer afternoon, looking out of a bus window, we see what looks like water lying on the tarmac ahead. As we draw near, it moves further on.

Many of our longings are like this: what we want is peace, and what we chase is something that looks like it. Rather than condemning the longing, it helps more to notice, slowly, what it is really looking for.
