Guru Purnima is the full moon of Ashadha, the fifteenth tithi of the bright fortnight, reckoned at sunrise. It is the day on which the teacher is formally worshipped.
Guru Purnima and Vyasa Purnima are the same day under two names, and it is worth saying so plainly, because they are often printed as though they were separate entries. The day is named for Veda Vyasa, held to have been born on it, who divided the Veda into four, compiled the puranas and composed the Mahabharata. The worship offered to one’s own teacher on this day is offered through him, which is why the rite performed in a math is called Vyasa Puja and not guru puja.
When it falls
The full moon of Ashadha is taken at sunrise. Purnima is a long tithi and usually spans one sunrise cleanly, but when it is current at two consecutive sunrises the earlier day is taken for this observance. Where the drik and Surya Siddhanta reckonings place the boundary of purnima on either side of a sunrise, the two calendars will show different days, and Anudina shows both.
What is done
In a math or a traditional school the day begins with Vyasa Puja: the seat of the teacher is worshipped, the lineage of teachers is recited from Narayana down through Vyasa and Shankara to the present head, and the disciples make their offering. At Sringeri and the other Shankara mathas this is also the day the Chaturmasya vrata of the sanyasi opens, and it is the reason the Smarta tradition begins the four months here rather than at the ekadashi four days earlier.
In a household the observance is simpler. Those who have a teacher, of the Veda, of music, of dance, of an art, go to them, offer fruit, betel and cloth, and take their blessing. Where the teacher is no longer living the offering is made at their photograph or at the seat they used.
Karnataka practice
The day is kept at Sringeri, at Udupi and at the Lingayat and Veerashaiva mathas alike, and in Karnataka it is understood chiefly as a math day rather than a household festival. The crowds are at the institutions. Many families simply visit the math of their sampradaya, take tirtha and prasada, and return.
In the Dattatreya tradition, strong in northern Karnataka and Maharashtra, the day carries further weight, as Dattatreya is held to be the guru of gurus, and the Gurucharitra is read.
Beyond the Hindu calendar
The same full moon is Asalha Puja for Buddhists, marking the first sermon at Sarnath, and it opens the Buddhist vassa retreat. Jains keep it as the day Mahavira took his first disciple. Three traditions marking teaching and beginning a rains retreat on the same full moon reflects a shared older calendar, not borrowing in either direction.
One clarification
Guru Purnima has nothing to do with Guruvara, Thursday, or with the planet Jupiter, whose Sanskrit name is also Guru. The day falls on whatever weekday the full moon of Ashadha falls on. The coincidence of names causes a certain amount of confident misinformation.
