The twelve lunar months are Chaitra, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwayuja (also Ashwina), Kartika, Margashira, Pushya (also Pausha), Magha and Phalguna.
Each is named after the nakshatra near which the full moon falls in that month. The full moon of Chaitra falls near Chitra, of Vishakha near Vishakha, of Shravana near Shravana. The correspondence is no longer exact, because the naming was fixed long ago and the relationship has shifted, but it is the origin of the names.
How a month gets its name in practice
The rule an almanac actually applies is solar. A lunar month takes its name from the zodiac sign the sun occupies when that month begins. If the sun is in Meena at the new moon, the month is Chaitra; in Mesha, Vaishakha; in Simha, Bhadrapada; and so on round.
This is what ties the lunar months to the seasons. Without it, twelve lunar months of 29.5 days would fall eleven days short of the solar year and the months would drift backwards through the seasons at the rate the Islamic calendar does.
Amanta and purnimanta
Two conventions exist for where a month starts.
The amanta month runs from one new moon to the next, so it begins with the bright fortnight and ends with the dark. This is the convention in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Gujarat.
The purnimanta month runs from one full moon to the next, so it begins with the dark fortnight. This is the convention across most of North India.
During the bright fortnight the two agree. During the dark fortnight the purnimanta name is one month ahead. This is why Maha Shivaratri is described as falling in Magha in the south and in Phalguna in the north, though everyone observes it on the same night.
The thirteenth month
Roughly every thirty-two and a half months the sun fails to change sign during a whole lunar month. That month takes the same name as the one following it and is marked adhika, additional. The year then has thirteen months. The intercalary month is considered unsuitable for weddings, house entry and other auspicious beginnings, and annual festivals are kept in the nija, or true, month rather than the adhika one.
The year 2026 has an adhika Jyeshtha. The two Ekadashis falling in it take the special names Padmini and Parama, used only in an intercalary month.
