Skanda Shashti belongs to Skanda, the son of Shiva who is called Subrahmanya through most of Karnataka, Kartikeya in the north and Murugan in Tamil Nadu. It closes a six day observance that begins on the first tithi after the new moon and ends on the sixth, and the event it carries is the killing of Surapadma, the demon the gods brought Skanda into being to destroy.
When it falls and why
It is the sixth tithi, Shashthi, of the bright fortnight of Kartika. The day that carries it is the day on which Shashthi is running at sunrise.
That one rule settles most of what looks like disagreement between almanacs. A Shashthi that begins at ten in the morning has not made that morning a Shashthi day: the day belongs to the tithi present at dawn, so the observance falls on the following day, when Shashthi is there when the sun comes up. Where an almanac prints a different date it has usually taken the tithi at some other hour, or has counted from a different month.
Tamil almanacs arrive at the same day by another road, counting the six days from the new moon of Aippasi, the solar month that overlaps Kartika. The two reckonings normally land together, and in the years they do not, the difference is a day.
The six days
Those who keep the vrata fast from Prathama to Shashthi, most commonly on one meal a day, some on fruit and milk, and break it after the puja on the sixth. Skanda is offered abhisheka with milk and tender coconut, and the flowers preferred are red. In Tamil Nadu the sixth day at Tiruchendur is the Surasamhara, the killing itself, enacted on the shore in the late afternoon, and the day following is Skanda’s marriage to Devasena.
Karnataka keeps the day more quietly. It is marked at Subrahmanya temples with abhisheka and a longer archana, and at Kukke Subrahmanya, Ghati Subrahmanya and Kumara Parvata it draws a crowd, but it is not the great day of the year at any of them. Households that keep the vrata do so as a family observance rather than a public one.
The other Shashthi, and the confusion
A month later comes Subrahmanya Shashti, the sixth tithi of the bright fortnight of Margashira, which Maharashtra calls Champa Shashti. It is the same deity and the same tithi number, one lunar month apart, and it is the larger festival in Karnataka: Kukke Subrahmanya keeps its principal utsava then, not now.
So a reader who hears that the Subrahmanya festival is in Kartika and also that it is in Margashira is not being told two contradictory things. There are two observances. Skanda Shashti in Kartika is the victory over Surapadma and the six day fast, strongest in Tamil Nadu. Subrahmanya Shashti in Margashira is the Karnataka and Maharashtra day, tied to Kukke and to Khandoba at Jejuri. Those who wish may keep both.
There is a third layer under both. The Shashthi of every bright fortnight is a Skanda day for those who keep the monthly vrata, and Kartika’s is simply the strongest of the twelve.
