ಧರ್ಮೇ ತತ್ಪರತಾ ಮುಖೇ ಮಧುರತಾ: ಸಜ್ಜನರಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಕಾಣುವ ಹನ್ನೊಂದು ಗುಣಗಳು

ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಗೆ ಹೊಸ ವೈದ್ಯರನ್ನು ನೇಮಿಸುವಾಗ ಸಂದರ್ಶನ ಸಮಿತಿ ಅಂಕಪಟ್ಟಿ ನೋಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಕೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಇದೇ: ಈ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ರೋಗಿಯ ಮುಂದೆ ಹೇಗಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂದು.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅಂಥ ಕಣ್ಣಿನಿಂದ ಹನ್ನೊಂದು ಗುಣಗಳ ಪಟ್ಟಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅವು ಸಜ್ಜನರಲ್ಲೇ ಕಾಣುತ್ತವೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದೊಂದು ನಾಲ್ಕು ಪಾದಗಳ ವೃತ್ತ, ಪ್ರತಿ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು ಮೂವತ್ತೆಂಟು ಅಕ್ಷರ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಧರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ತತ್ಪರತೆ, ಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಧುರತೆ, ದಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಉತ್ಸಾಹ, ಮಿತ್ರನಿಗೆ ವಂಚಿಸದಿರುವುದು, ಗುರುವಿನಲ್ಲಿ ವಿನಯ, ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಆಳವಾದ ಗಾಂಭೀರ್ಯ, ನಡವಳಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶುದ್ಧತೆ, ಗುಣವನ್ನು ಮೆಚ್ಚುವ ಅಭಿರುಚಿ, ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ಆಳವಾದ ತಿಳಿವು, ರೂಪದ ಸೊಗಸು, ಹರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಕ್ತಿ. ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಸಜ್ಜನರಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಕಾಣುತ್ತವೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Devotion to dharma, sweetness in speech, eagerness in giving, honesty toward a friend, humility toward the teacher, great depth of mind, purity in conduct, a taste for virtue, deep knowledge of the texts, comeliness of form, devotion to Hari: all this is seen only among the good.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಪ್ರತಿ ಪದವೂ ತಾ ಎಂಬ ಅಂತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಗಿಯುತ್ತದೆ: ತತ್ಪರತಾ, ಮಧುರತಾ, ಸುಂದರತಾ. ಭಾವನಾಮ ರೂಪದ ಈ ಪುನರಾವೃತ್ತಿ ಪಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ಲಯ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ.

Each quality in the verse ends in the same suffix, as in tatparata, madhurata, sundarata. This repetition of abstract nouns gives the list a rhythm.

ಪಟ್ಟಿಯ ಹನ್ನೊಂದನೆಯದಾದ ಹರಿಭಕ್ತಿ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ, ರೂಪದ ಸೊಗಸು ಹೊರಗಿನದು. ಕವಿ ಒಳಗಿನ ಮತ್ತು ಹೊರಗಿನ, ನಡೆ ಮತ್ತು ನುಡಿಯ ಗುಣಗಳನ್ನು ಒಂದೇ ಉಸಿರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಜೋಡಿಸಿದ್ದಾನೆ.

The list mixes the devotional (devotion to Hari) with the outward (comeliness of form). The poet strings inner and outer, deed and word, in a single breath.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಈ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಿದ್ಯೆಯ ಗುಣಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ವರ್ತನೆಯ ಗುಣಗಳು ಸಮನಾಗಿವೆ. ಅಂಕ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಬಂದವನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಧುರ ಮಾತು ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ಪಟ್ಟಿ ಅರ್ಧ ಮಾತ್ರ ತುಂಬಿದಂತೆ.

Learning and conduct stand level in this list. A person with the top marks but no sweetness of speech has filled only half the list.

ಹನ್ನೊಂದೂ ಒಬ್ಬರಲ್ಲಿ ಇರಬೇಕೆಂದು ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿಸುವ ಬದಲು, ನಾವು ಯಾವ ಒಂದನ್ನು ಈ ವಾರ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಬೆಳೆಸಬಹುದು ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಉಪಯುಕ್ತ.

Instead of expecting all eleven in one person, it is more useful to ask which one we might nurture a little this week.
