To one tormented by heat, neither a bath in very cool water, nor a string of pearls, nor sandal paste applied on every limb gives as much comfort as the speech of the good gives delight to the mind, especially when offered with sound reasoning. It is like a charm that draws the virtuous.

About this subhashita

The verse lists three cooling things in a row: water, pearls, sandal. All three act on the body. The comparison turns on the fourth, which acts on the mind.

Sadyukti means sound reasoning, or a way of putting things that carries conviction. The fine point is that even a good person’s words do not cool if the manner of saying them is poor.

For life today

It recalls the moment of giving a diagnosis. The same news told calmly, with reasons, cools the patient’s mind. Told in a hurry, it burns.

The verse is not saying words replace treatment. It says only that the heat of the mind needs the coolness of words.
