ನೂನಂ ದುಗ್ಧಾಬ್ಧಿಮಂಥೋತ್ಥ: ಸಜ್ಜನ ದುರ್ಜನರ ಒಂದೇ ಹುಟ್ಟು

ಒಂದೇ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೇ ತಾಯಿಯ ಮಡಿಲಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಸ್ವಭಾವದವರಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆಯುವುದನ್ನು ನಾವು ನೋಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಹುಟ್ಟು ಒಂದೇ ಆದರೂ ನಡೆ ಒಂದೇ ಆಗಬೇಕೆಂಬ ನಿಯಮವಿಲ್ಲ.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅದೇ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಪುರಾಣದ ಒಂದು ಚಿತ್ರದ ಮೂಲಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದೊಂದು ಅನುಷ್ಟುಪ್ ಛಂದಸ್ಸಿನ ಶ್ಲೋಕ.

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ನೂನಂ (नूनं, nūnaṃ) = ನಿಶ್ಚಯವಾಗಿ (surely)
ದುಗ್ಧಾಬ್ಧಿಮಂಥೋತ್ಥಾವಿಮೌ (दुग्धाब्धिमन्थोत्थाविमौ, dugdhābdhimanthotthāvimau) = ಹಾಲ್ಗಡಲನ್ನು ಕಡೆದಾಗ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಈ ಇಬ್ಬರು (these two, born of the churning of the milk ocean)
ಸುಜನದುರ್ಜನೌ (सुजनदुर्जनौ, sujanadurjanau) = ಸಜ್ಜನನೂ ದುರ್ಜನನೂ (the good person and the bad person)
ಕಿಂ ತು (किं तु, kiṃ tu) = ಆದರೆ (but)
ಇಂದೋಃ (इन्दोः, indoḥ) = ಚಂದ್ರನ (of the moon)
ಸೋದರಃ (सोदरः, sodaraḥ) = ಸಹೋದರ (brother)

ಚೇತರಃ (चेतरः, cetaraḥ) = ಮತ್ತು ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬನು (and the other)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಸಜ್ಜನ ಮತ್ತು ದುರ್ಜನ ಇವರಿಬ್ಬರೂ ಹಾಲ್ಗಡಲನ್ನು ಕಡೆದಾಗ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವರೇ ಇರಬೇಕು. ಆದರೆ ಮೊದಲನೆಯವನು ಚಂದ್ರನ ಸಹೋದರ, ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬನು ಕಾಲಕೂಟ ವಿಷದ ಸಹೋದರ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

The good person and the bad person must both have risen from the churning of the milk ocean. But the first is a brother of the moon, and the other a brother of the Kalakuta poison.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಪುರಾಣದ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವತೆಗಳೂ ಅಸುರರೂ ಹಾಲ್ಗಡಲನ್ನು ಕಡೆದಾಗ ಚಂದ್ರನೂ ಕಾಲಕೂಟ ವಿಷವೂ ಒಂದೇ ಕಡೆಯಿಂದ ಹೊರಬಂದವು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಕವಿ ಆ ನೆನಪನ್ನೇ ಬಳಸಿದ್ದಾನೆ.

In the old story, the moon and the Kalakuta poison both came out of the same churning of the milk ocean. The poet draws on that memory.

ನೂನಂ ಎಂದರೆ ನಿಶ್ಚಯವಾಗಿ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು ಊಹೆಯ ದನಿಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ, ಅಂದರೆ ಹೀಗೇ ಇರಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ಭಾವ. ಹುಟ್ಟು ಒಂದೇ ಆದರೂ ಇಬ್ಬರ ಗುಣ ಇಷ್ಟು ಬೇರೆ ಏಕೆ ಎಂಬ ಅಚ್ಚರಿಯನ್ನು ಅದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

Nunam means surely, but here it carries the tone of a guess, as in it must be so. It voices the wonder that two with one origin turn out so different.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಒಂದೇ ಕೋರ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೇ ಬ್ಯಾಚಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲಿತ ಇಬ್ಬರು ವೈದ್ಯರು ಕೆಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಹಾದಿ ಹಿಡಿಯುವುದುಂಟು. ಒಂದೇ ಶಾಲೆ, ಒಂದೇ ಊರು ಎಂಬುದರಿಂದ ಯಾರ ಗುಣವನ್ನೂ ನಾವು ಊಹಿಸಲಾಗದು.

Two doctors from the same course and the same batch can take quite different roads within a few years. Sharing a school or a town tells us little about anyone’s character.

ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹುಟ್ಟನ್ನು ದೂರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಕುಲವನ್ನೂ ಹೊಗಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಮನುಷ್ಯನನ್ನು ಅವನ ನಡೆಯಿಂದ ಅಳೆಯಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ಸೂಚನೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಅಡಗಿದೆ ಎನ್ನಬಹುದು.

The verse neither blames birth nor praises lineage. One may read in it a hint that a person is to be judged by conduct.
