durjanaṃ prathamaṃ vande sajjanaṃ tadanantaram
mukhaprakṣālanātpūrvaṃ gudaprakṣālanaṃ yathā
- ದುರ್ಜನಂ (दुर्जनं, durjanaṃ) = ದುರ್ಜನನನ್ನು (the wicked one)
(I salute)
- ಸಜ್ಜನಂ (सज्जनं, sajjanaṃ) = ಸಜ್ಜನನನ್ನು (the good one)
- ತದನಂತರಮ್ (तदनन्तरम्, tadanantaram) = ಅದರ ನಂತರ (after that)
- ಮುಖಪ್ರಕ್ಷಾಲನಾತ್ಪೂರ್ವಂ (मुखप्रक्षालनात्पूर्वं, mukhaprakṣālanātpūrvaṃ) = ಮುಖ ತೊಳೆಯುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮೊದಲು (before the washing of the face)
- ಗುದಪ್ರಕ್ಷಾಲನಂ (गुदप्रक्षालनं, gudaprakṣālanaṃ) = ಗುದ ತೊಳೆಯುವುದು (the washing of the lower passage)
I salute the wicked one first and the good one after, just as one washes the lower passage before washing the face.
About this subhashita
This is irony, not praise. The wicked one is named first in the sense that some chores are best finished early, not because he is honoured.
The verse uses the comparison once and stops there. Its sharp stroke is to bring the wicked one down to the rank of a chore.

For life today
One can read it as saying that unavoidable unpleasant matters are best finished first. A difficult conversation put off weighs on the whole day.
Nor should the verse be taken literally. It is not saying that the wicked deserve the first honour.
