ಊಟದ ಡಬ್ಬಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳ್ಳುಳ್ಳಿ ಇದ್ದರೆ ಡಬ್ಬಿ ತೊಳೆದ ಮೇಲೂ ಅದರ ವಾಸನೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಅಡುಗೆಮನೆಯವರಿಗೆ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಗೊತ್ತು.

ಈ ಆರ್ಯಾ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅದೇ ಬೆಳ್ಳುಳ್ಳಿಯನ್ನು ಕಸ್ತೂರಿ, ಕರ್ಪೂರ, ಅಗರು, ಚಂದನದ ಜೊತೆ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿ ನೀಚನ ಸ್ವಭಾವವನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

मृगमदकर्पूरागुरुचन्दनगन्धाधिवासितो लशुनः
न त्यजति गन्धमशुभं प्रकृतिमिव सहोत्थितां नीचः

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಮೃಗಮದಕರ್ಪೂರಾಗುರುಚಂದನ (मृगमदकर्पूरागुरुचन्दन, mṛgamadakarpūrāgurucandana) = ಕಸ್ತೂರಿ, ಕರ್ಪೂರ, ಅಗರು, ಚಂದನಗಳ (musk, camphor, aloe wood and sandal)
ಗಂಧಾಧಿವಾಸಿತೋ (गन्धाधिवासितो, gandhādhivāsito) = ಪರಿಮಳ ಹಚ್ಚಿ ಘಮ ಸೇರಿಸಿದರೂ (though scented with the fragrance)
ಲಶುನಃ (लशुनः, laśunaḥ) = ಬೆಳ್ಳುಳ್ಳಿ (garlic)
ನ (न, na) = ಇಲ್ಲ (not)
ತ್ಯಜತಿ (त्यजति, tyajati) = ಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ (gives up)
ಗಂಧಮಶುಭಂ (गन्धमशुभं, gandhamaśubhaṃ) = ಕೆಟ್ಟ ವಾಸನೆಯನ್ನು (its bad smell)
ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಮಿವ (प्रकृतिमिव, prakṛtimiva) = ಸ್ವಭಾವದಂತೆ (as one gives up a nature)
ಸಹೋತ್ಥಿತಾಂ (सहोत्थितां, sahotthitāṃ) = ಜೊತೆಗೇ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ (born along with it)
ನೀಚಃ (नीचः, nīcaḥ) = ನೀಚ (the base person)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಕಸ್ತೂರಿ, ಕರ್ಪೂರ, ಅಗರು, ಚಂದನಗಳ ಸುಗಂಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಅದ್ದಿ ಪರಿಮಳ ಹಚ್ಚಿದರೂ ಬೆಳ್ಳುಳ್ಳಿ ತನ್ನ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ವಾಸನೆಯನ್ನು ಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ನೀಚನೂ ತನ್ನೊಂದಿಗೇ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಸ್ವಭಾವವನ್ನು ಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Even when it is soaked in the fragrance of musk, camphor, aloe wood and sandal, garlic does not give up its bad smell. In the same way the base person does not give up the nature he was born with.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಅಧಿವಾಸಿತ ಎಂದರೆ ಪರಿಮಳ ಹಚ್ಚಿದ. ಹೊರಗಿನಿಂದ ಎಂಥ ಸುಗಂಧ ಹಚ್ಚಿದರೂ ಒಳಗಿನ ಗುಣ ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಬದಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಉಪಮೆಯ ತಿರುಳು.

Adhivasita means scented, perfumed. The core of the comparison is that no perfume applied from outside easily changes what is inside.

ಸಹೋತ್ಥಿತ ಎಂದರೆ ಜೊತೆಗೇ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ. ಸ್ವಭಾವ ಬೆಳೆದ ಮೇಲೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದಲ್ಲ, ಹುಟ್ಟಿನೊಂದಿಗೇ ಬಂದದ್ದು ಎಂದು ಕವಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನೀಚ ಎಂದರೆ ಕೀಳು ನಡತೆಯವನು, ಯಾವುದೇ ವರ್ಗದವನಲ್ಲ.

Sahotthita means risen together, born along with. The poet says the nature was not added later but came with the birth. Here nicha means one of low conduct, not a member of any class.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಹೊರಗಿನ ಮೆರುಗು ಒಳಗಿನ ಸ್ವಭಾವವನ್ನು ಬದಲಿಸದು. ಒಬ್ಬರನ್ನು ಅರಿಯಬೇಕಾದರೆ ಅವರ ಉಡುಪು ಅಥವಾ ಪದವಿಗಿಂತ ಒತ್ತಡದ ಹೊತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ನಡತೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡುವುದು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

A bright finish outside does not change the nature within. To know a person, their conduct under pressure says more than their dress or their rank.

ಇದು ಮನುಷ್ಯರು ಎಂದೂ ಬದಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ತೀರ್ಪಲ್ಲ. ಪದ್ಯದ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಅನುಭವದ ಮಾತಾಗಿ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು, ಪ್ರತಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗೂ ಅನ್ವಯಿಸುವ ನಿಯಮವಾಗಿ ಅಲ್ಲ.

This is not a ruling that people never change. The verse is best taken as a remark from common experience, not a rule that fits every person.
