ಇತರದೇವ ಬಹಿರ್ಮುಖಮುಚ್ಯತೇ: ಬಾಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು, ಹೃದಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು

ಕ್ಲಿನಿಕ್ಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಳಿತ ರೋಗಿ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅವರ ಮುಖ ಬೇರೆಯದೇ ಕಥೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಹೇಳುವುದಕ್ಕೂ ಅನ್ನಿಸುವುದಕ್ಕೂ ಅಂತರ ಇರುವುದು ಸಹಜ.

ಆ ಅಂತರ ಉದ್ದೇಶಪೂರ್ವಕವಾದಾಗ ಅದು ವಂಚನೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಂಥ ನಡತೆಯನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣುವ ಪ್ರತಿಬಿಂಬಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಇತರದೇವ (इतरदेव, itaradeva) = ಬೇರೆಯದೇ ಒಂದು (quite another thing)
ಬಹಿರ್ಮುಖಮುಚ್ಯತೇ (बहिर्मुखमुच्यते, bahirmukhamucyate) = ಹೊರಮುಖವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುವುದು (what is said outwardly)
ಹೃದಿ (हृदि, hṛdi) = ಹೃದಯದಲ್ಲಿ (in the heart)
ತು (तु, tu) = ಆದರೆ (but)
ಯತ್ಸ್ಫುರತೀತರದೇವ (यत्स्फुरतीतरदेव, yatsphuratītaradeva) = ಯಾವುದು ಹೊಳೆಯುತ್ತದೋ ಅದು ಬೇರೆಯೇ (what flashes there is something else again)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ದುಷ್ಟರು ಹೊರಗೆ ಹೇಳುವುದು ಒಂದು, ಅವರ ಹೃದಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಳೆಯುವುದು ಇನ್ನೊಂದೇ. ಅಸ್ಥಿರ ಮನದವರನ್ನು ವಂಚಿಸುವ ಅವರ ಈ ನಡತೆ, ಮುಂದೆ ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣುವ ಪ್ರತಿಬಿಂಬದಂತೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

What the wicked say outwardly is one thing, and what shines in their hearts is quite another. This conduct of theirs, which deceives the unsteady, is like a reflection seen in the water in front of one.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಪ್ರತಿಬಿಂಬ ನೋಡಲು ನಿಜದಂತೆಯೇ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಕೈ ಹಾಕಿದರೆ ಏನೂ ಸಿಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಮಾತು ಹತ್ತಿರ ಕಂಡರೂ ಅದರ ಹಿಂದೆ ಏನೂ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಕವಿ ಇದರಿಂದ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ.

A reflection looks real, but the hand closes on nothing. The poet uses it to say that the words may look close and solid while nothing stands behind them.

ಅಧೀರ ಎಂದರೆ ದೃಢವಿಲ್ಲದವನು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ವಂಚನೆಗೆ ಒಳಗಾಗುವವನನ್ನು ಜಾಣ ಎನ್ನದೆ ಅಸ್ಥಿರ ಮನದವನು ಎಂದಿರುವುದು ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ. ಧುರಿ ಎಂಬ ಪದವನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂದೆ ಎಂದು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

Adhira means one who is not firm. It is notable that the one who is taken in is called unsteady, not foolish. We have taken the word dhuri here to mean in front.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಹೇಳುವುದಕ್ಕೂ ಮಾಡುವುದಕ್ಕೂ ಪದೇ ಪದೇ ಅಂತರ ತೋರಿಸಿದರೆ, ಮಾತನ್ನು ಅಲ್ಲ ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ನೋಡುವುದೇ ಮೇಲು. ಕಾಲ ಕಳೆದಂತೆ ನೀರಿನ ಪ್ರತಿಬಿಂಬ ಅಲುಗುತ್ತದೆ.

If someone shows the gap between saying and doing again and again, it is better to watch the act than the word. With time the reflection in the water ripples.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಪ್ರತಿ ಮೌನವನ್ನೂ ಸಂಶಯದಿಂದ ನೋಡಲು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಳಗಿನದನ್ನು ಮರೆಮಾಚುವುದನ್ನು ಸ್ವಭಾವವಾಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡವರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಅದರ ಮಾತು.

The verse does not ask us to doubt every silence. It speaks only of those who have made hiding what is within a habit.
