Where is the slanderer’s course ever checked? He bites the one he has seen and the one he has only heard of. This is very hard even for the snakes whose eye is their ear, and for those whose glance is poison.
About this subhashita
Drikshruti means a creature whose eye is its ear. It is well known that the snake is called so, and we have taken that as the sense here.
A snake bites only what falls in its sight. The slanderer’s bite starts even from a piece of hearsay. That is the sting of the verse.

For life today
Before passing on what we heard, it is a small habit to ask who actually saw it. Yet it spares many a bite.
When gossip spreads in a team, what usually falls victim is trust at work. It is slow to build and quick to lose.
