It would be fitting for scholarship to check the spread of this darkness of pride that has taken constant hold. Yet in the world some rely on that very scholarship and spread ego, a blindness of a hundred branches. Alas.

About this subhashita

Darkness here is pride and what should be light is learning. If the light itself becomes the home of the dark, the poet’s dismay is natural.

Shatashakha means having a hundred branches. The picture is of blindness branching out like a tree. The words durjana or khala do not occur here: the verse speaks only of the proud.

For life today

As a doctor learns more, there is a risk that patience to listen to the patient grows less. Teachers can test themselves for this.

How learning is used matters more than how much was read. One who keeps counting the regard others give him for what he learnt has already turned toward the dark.
