ಪ್ರಾಯಃ ಸ್ವಭಾವಮನಿಲೋ: ಹೊಗೆ ಇದ್ದರೆ ಬೆಂಕಿಯ ಬಳಿಯೂ ಕೂರಲಾಗದು

ಒದ್ದೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿಗೆಯ ಒಲೆಯ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಕುಳಿತವರಿಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತು. ಬೆಂಕಿ ಬೆಚ್ಚಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಹೊಗೆ ಕಣ್ಣಲ್ಲಿ ನೀರು ತರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ದೊಡ್ಡವರ ಹತ್ತಿರ ನೆಲೆಸಿರುವ ದುಷ್ಟನ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅದೇ ಹೊಗೆಗೆ ಹೋಲಿಸಿದೆ.

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಪ್ರಾಯಃ (प्रायः, prāyaḥ) = ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ (generally)
ಸ್ವಭಾವಮನಿಲೋ (स्वभावमनिलो, svabhāvamanilo) = ಸ್ವಭಾವತಃ ಮಲಿನನಾದ ಎಂದು ಅರ್ಥ ಹಿಡಿದಿದ್ದೇವೆ (taken here as impure by nature)
ಮಹತಾಂ (महतां, mahatāṃ) = ದೊಡ್ಡವರ (of the great)
ಸಮೀಪೇ (समीपे, samīpe) = ಹತ್ತಿರ (near)
ತಿಷ್ಠನ್ಖಲಃ (तिष्ठन्खलः, tiṣṭhankhalaḥ) = ನಿಂತಿರುವ ದುಷ್ಟ (the wicked man staying)
ಪ್ರಕುರುತೇಽರ್ಥಿಜನೋಪಘಾತಮ್ (प्रकुरुतेऽर्थिजनोपघातम्, prakurute’rthijanopaghātam) = ಬೇಡಿ ಬಂದವರಿಗೆ ಹಾನಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ (does harm to petitioners)
ಶೀಲಾರ್ದಿತೈಃ (शीलार्दितैः, śīlārditaiḥ) = ಆ ಸ್ವಭಾವದಿಂದ ಪೀಡಿತರಾದವರಿಂದ (by those troubled by its nature)
ಸಕಲಲೋಕಸುಖಾವಹೋಽಪಿ (सकललोकसुखावहोऽपि, sakalalokasukhāvaho’pi) = ಇಡೀ ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಸುಖ ತರುವುದಾದರೂ (though it brings comfort to the whole world)
ಧೂಮೇ (धूमे, dhūme) = ಹೊಗೆ (when smoke)
ಸ್ಥಿತೇ (स्थिते, sthite) = ಇರುವಾಗ (is present)

ಸುಖೇನ (सुखेन, sukhena) = ಸುಖವಾಗಿ (comfortably)
ನಿಷೇವ್ಯತೇಽಗ್ನಿಃ (निषेव्यतेऽग्निः, niṣevyate’gniḥ) = ಬೆಂಕಿಯನ್ನು ಸೇವಿಸಲಾಗುವುದು (is fire attended)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಸ್ವಭಾವತಃ ಮಲಿನನಾದ ದುಷ್ಟ ದೊಡ್ಡವರ ಹತ್ತಿರ ನಿಂತು ಬೇಡಿ ಬಂದವರಿಗೆ ಹಾನಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಬೆಂಕಿ ಇಡೀ ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಸುಖ ತರುವಂಥದ್ದಾದರೂ ಹೊಗೆ ಇದ್ದಾಗ ಅದರಿಂದ ತೊಂದರೆಗೊಳಗಾದವರು ಅದನ್ನು ಸುಖವಾಗಿ ಬಳಸಲಾರರು.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

A wicked man, impure by nature, stays near the great and harms those who come to ask. Even fire, which brings comfort to the whole world, cannot be comfortably attended by those it troubles when smoke is present.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಮುದ್ರಿತ ಪಾಠ ಸ್ವಭಾವಮನಿಲೋ ಎಂದಿದೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ಇದ್ದಂತೆಯೇ ಪದಶಃ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವಭಾವತಃ ಮಲಿನ ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥ ಹೊಂದುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ನಮಗೆ ಅನಿಸಿದೆ, ಆದರೆ ಇದು ನಮ್ಮ ಊಹೆ.

The printed text reads svabhavamanilo. We have given it as it stands. We think the sense impure by nature fits here, but that is our reading.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಂಕಿ ಎಂದರೆ ದೊಡ್ಡವರು, ಹೊಗೆ ಎಂದರೆ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಸೇರಿಕೊಂಡ ದುಷ್ಟ. ಬೆಂಕಿಯ ತಪ್ಪಲ್ಲ, ಆದರೂ ಜನ ಬೆಂಕಿಯಿಂದಲೇ ದೂರ ಸರಿಯುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಚಿತ್ರದ ಚುರುಕು.

Fire stands for the great, smoke for the wicked who gather around. The fire is not at fault, yet people move away from the fire itself. That is the sting of the picture.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಒಬ್ಬ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಗುರು ಅಥವಾ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಯ ಸುತ್ತ ಒಂದಿಬ್ಬರು ಕಟುವಾದವರು ಸೇರಿಕೊಂಡರೆ ಅರ್ಜಿ ತರುವವರು ಹಿಂಜರಿಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಬಾಗಿಲು ಕಾಯುವವರ ವರ್ತನೆಯೂ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯ ಹೆಸರಿಗೆ ಸೇರುತ್ತದೆ.

If one or two harsh people gather around a good teacher or officer, those with a request hesitate to approach. The conduct of those at the door also adds to the name of the place, a hospital included.

ದೊಡ್ಡವರಾಗಿರುವವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಸುತ್ತಲಿನ ಹೊಗೆಯನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂದೂ ಇದನ್ನು ಓದಬಹುದು. ಹೊಗೆ ಬೆಂಕಿಯ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಕೆಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

It can also be read as advice to the great to watch the smoke around them. Smoke spoils the name of the fire.
