ಮುಕ್ತಾಫಲಂ ಕಿಂ ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಣಾಂ: ಕುರುಡನ ಮುಂದೆ ದೀಪ

ಕೆಲವರಿಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ವಿವರಿಸಿದರೂ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನವಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದು ನಮಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗುವುದು ವಿವರಿಸಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದ ಮೇಲೆಯೇ. ಆ ಮೊದಲು ನಾವು ನಮ್ಮ ಶ್ರಮವನ್ನೇ ನೆಚ್ಚಿಕೊಂಡಿರುತ್ತೇವೆ.

ಈ ಉಪಜಾತಿ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅದೇ ಮಾತನ್ನು ನಾಲ್ಕು ಚಿತ್ರಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲೂ ಒಂದು ಜೋಡಿ.

मुक्ताफलं किं मृगपक्षिणां च
मृष्टान्नपानं किमु गर्दभानाम् ।
अन्धस्य दीपो बधिरस्य गीतं
मूर्खस्य किं धर्मकथाप्रसङ्गः ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಮುಕ್ತಾಫಲಮ್ (मुक्ताफलम्, muktāphalam) = ಮುತ್ತು (a pearl)
ಕಿಮ್ (किम्, kim) = ಏನು ಪ್ರಯೋಜನ (what is the use of)
ಮೃಗಪಕ್ಷಿಣಾಮ್ (मृगपक्षिणाम्, mṛgapakṣiṇām) = ಮೃಗಗಳಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳಿಗೆ (to beasts and birds)
ಚ (च, ca) = ಮತ್ತು (and)
ಮೃಷ್ಟಾನ್ನಪಾನಮ್ (मृष्टान्नपानम्, mṛṣṭānnapānam) = ರುಚಿಯಾದ ಊಟ ಮತ್ತು ಪಾನೀಯ (fine food and drink)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಮೃಗಗಳಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಮುತ್ತಿನಿಂದ ಏನು ಪ್ರಯೋಜನ. ಕತ್ತೆಗಳಿಗೆ ರುಚಿಯಾದ ಊಟ ಪಾನೀಯದಿಂದ ಏನು ಪ್ರಯೋಜನ. ಕುರುಡನಿಗೆ ದೀಪ, ಕಿವುಡನಿಗೆ ಹಾಡು. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಮೂರ್ಖನಿಗೆ ಧರ್ಮದ ಮಾತಿನ ಪ್ರಸಂಗದಿಂದ ಏನು ಪ್ರಯೋಜನ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

What is a pearl to beasts and birds, or fine food and drink to donkeys? A lamp before a blind man, a song for a deaf man: and what is an occasion of talk about dharma to a fool?

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಮೊದಲ ಎರಡು ಚಿತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಅರಿವಿನ ಕೊರತೆ. ನಂತರದ ಎರಡರಲ್ಲಿ ಮನುಷ್ಯರಿಗೆ ಇಂದ್ರಿಯದ ಕೊರತೆ. ಮೂರ್ಖನನ್ನು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಈ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಗುಂಪಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಇಟ್ಟಿದೆ. ಅವನ ಕೊರತೆಯನ್ನು ಅದು ಕುರುಡಿನಷ್ಟೇ ಆಳವಾಗಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ.

In the first two images the creatures lack discernment; in the next two the men lack an organ. The verse puts the fool in the second group, treating his want as being as deep as blindness.

ಮೂರನೆಯ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಿಂ ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸಾಲಿನ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯೇ ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೂ ಮುಂದುವರಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ಸಂಕ್ಷೇಪ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ವೇಗವನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

The third line has no kim at all; the question from the line before simply carries on into it. That compression is what gives the verse its pace.

ಕಿಮು ಎಂಬುದು ಕಿಂ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಉ ಸೇರಿದ ರೂಪ. ಬರೀ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯಲ್ಲ, ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ತಿರಸ್ಕಾರವೂ ಸೇರಿದೆ.

Kimu is kim with the particle u added. It is not a plain question; a note of contempt comes in with it.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ರೋಗಿಗೆ ಅಥವಾ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಹೇಳಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಕೇಳುವವರ ಸ್ಥಿತಿ ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಒಂದೇ ಪಾಠ ಕೊಟ್ಟು, ಅವರು ತಿಳಿಯಲಿಲ್ಲ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ನ್ಯಾಯವಲ್ಲ.

How much to say to a patient or a student is decided by the state of the one listening. To give everyone the same lesson and then blame them for not taking it is not fair.

ಆದರೆ ಮೂರ್ಖ ಎಂಬ ಪದವನ್ನು ನಾವು ಬೇಗ ಹಚ್ಚಿಬಿಡಬಾರದು. ಇಂದು ತಿಳಿಯದವನು ನಾಳೆ ತಿಳಿಯಬಹುದು. ಕೇಳುವ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯೇ ಇಲ್ಲದವರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಇದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದೆ.

But we should be slow to stick the label of fool on anyone. One who does not understand today may understand tomorrow. The verse speaks only of those with no wish to listen at all.
