The fool lives happily.

About this subhashita

The count of eight works out exactly: nishcinta, bahubhojana, atimukhara, ratrimdivam svapnabhak, karyakaryavicaranandhabadhira, manapamane sama, amayavarjita, dridhavapu. Count them and there are exactly eight. The verse is joking, but its arithmetic is sound.

Here is where the list bites. Two of its terms, nishcinta and manapamane samah, are marks of the wise man in another setting. The Bhagavadgita uses the same words of the sthitaprajna. Pinning them on the fool, the verse shows that from outside the two can look alike.

Prayena means for the most part. It is the one hedging word in the whole verse. It does not flatly say the fool has no illness, only that he mostly has none. That small slackening is what makes the list credible.

For life today

That worry wears the body down can now be measured. So amayavarjita and dridhavapu, those two items on the list, are not only a joke. Thinking has a price, and it is true that the body pays part of it.

But what the verse is pointing at is clear enough. Nobody asks for all eight of these together. If comfort were the only measure, foolishness would win. That nobody chooses it is itself evidence that comfort is not the only measure.
