ಸಂಪತ್ತೌ ಕೋಮಲಂ ಚಿತ್ತಂ: ಚಿಗುರೆಲೆ ಬಿಸಿಲಲ್ಲಿ ಗಟ್ಟಿ

ಚೈತ್ರದ ಚಿಗುರನ್ನು ಬೆರಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಟ್ಟಿದರೆ ಹರಿದುಹೋಗುವಷ್ಟು ಮೆದು. ಅದೇ ಎಲೆ ಜೇಷ್ಠದ ಬಿಸಿಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೈಗೆ ಗಡುಸಾಗಿ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಎಲೆ ಬದಲಾಗಿಲ್ಲ, ಕಾಲ ಬದಲಾಗಿದೆ.

ಆ ಎರಡು ಸ್ಪರ್ಶಗಳನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಸಜ್ಜನನ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಅಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಅನುಷ್ಟುಪ್ ಛಂದಸ್ಸಿನ ಮೊದಲ ಅರ್ಧ ಮನುಷ್ಯನದು, ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅರ್ಧ ಮರದದು.

ಸಂಪತ್ತೌ ಕೋಮಲಂ ಚಿತ್ತಂ ಸಾಧೋರಾಪದಿ ಕರ್ಕಶಮ್ ।
ಸುಕುಮಾರಂ ಮಧೌ ಪತ್ರಂ ತರೋಃ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ಕಠಿನಂ ಶುಚೌ ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

संपत्तौ कोमलं चित्तं साधोरापदि कर्कशम् ।
सुकुमारं मधौ पत्रं तरोः स्यात्कठिनं शुचौ ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

saṃpattau komalaṃ cittaṃ sādhorāpadi karkaśam |
sukumāraṃ madhau patraṃ taroḥ syātkaṭhinaṃ śucau ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಸಂಪತ್ತೌ (संपत्तौ, saṃpattau) = ಏಳಿಗೆ ಇರುವಾಗ (when things go well)
ಕೋಮಲಮ್ (कोमलम्, komalam) = ಮೃದು (soft)
ಚಿತ್ತಮ್ (चित्तम्, cittam) = ಮನಸ್ಸು (the mind)
ಸಾಧೋಃ (साधोः, sādhoḥ) = ಸಜ್ಜನನ (of the good man)
ಆಪದಿ (आपदि, āpadi) = ಕಷ್ಟ ಬಂದಾಗ (when trouble comes)
ಕರ್ಕಶಮ್ (कर्कशम्, karkaśam) = ಗಡುಸು (rough and hard)
ಸುಕುಮಾರಮ್ (सुकुमारम्, sukumāram) = ಬಹಳ ಮೆದುವಾದ (exceedingly tender)
ಮಧೌ (मधौ, madhau) = ಚೈತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ (in the spring month)
ಪತ್ರಮ್ (पत्रम्, patram) = ಎಲೆ (the leaf)
ತರೋಃ (तरोः, taroḥ) = ಮರದ (of a tree)
ಸ್ಯಾತ್ (स्यात्, syāt) = ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ (becomes)
ಕಠಿನಮ್ (कठिनम्, kaṭhinam) = ಗಟ್ಟಿ (hard)
ಶುಚೌ (शुचौ, śucau) = ಬೇಸಿಗೆಯ ಬಿಸಿಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ (in the dry heat)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಸಜ್ಜನನ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಏಳಿಗೆ ಇರುವಾಗ ಮೃದು, ಕಷ್ಟ ಬಂದಾಗ ಗಡುಸು. ಚೈತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹಳ ಮೆದುವಾಗಿದ್ದ ಮರದ ಎಲೆ ಬೇಸಿಗೆಯ ಬಿಸಿಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

The good man’s mind is soft when things go well and rough when trouble comes. The leaf of a tree, exceedingly tender in the spring month, turns hard in the dry heat.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಮಧು ಮತ್ತು ಶುಚಿ ಎರಡೂ ಮಾಸಗಳ ಹೆಸರುಗಳು. ಮಧು ಎಂದರೆ ಚೈತ್ರ, ಶುಚಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಜೇಷ್ಠ. ವಸಂತ ಬೇಸಿಗೆ ಎಂಬ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಪಂಚಾಂಗದ ಹೆಸರುಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿರುವುದು ಗಮನಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ.

Madhu and shuchi are both month names: Chaitra and Jyeshtha. It is worth noticing that the verse uses the names from the calendar rather than the general words for spring and summer.

ಕರ್ಕಶ ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ದೋಷವನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು ಹೊಗಳಿಕೆ. ಗಡುಸು ಎಂದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ರೂರ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಒಡೆಯದೆ ಉಳಿಯುವುದು ಎಂದು ಅರ್ಥ.

Karkasha is usually a word of fault. Here it is praise. The hardness meant is not cruelty but the property of not breaking.

ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಮನುಷ್ಯನಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ತಿರುಗುಮುರುಗಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಿರಿ ಬಂದಾಗ ಕಠಿಣ, ಕಷ್ಟ ಬಂದಾಗ ಕರಗಿಬಿಡುವುದು. ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ತಿರುವನ್ನು ಹೆಸರಿಸದೆ ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

In the ordinary man it runs the other way round: hard when he prospers and dissolving when he suffers. The verse points at that reversal without naming it.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಕೆಲಸ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ ಮೃದುವಾಗಿರುವುದು ಸುಲಭ. ರಾತ್ರಿ ಕೆಟ್ಟದಾಗಿ ತಿರುಗಿದಾಗ, ಒಂದು ಮಗು ಕೈತಪ್ಪಿಹೋದ ಮೇಲೆ, ಉಳಿದ ಹಾಸಿಗೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಲು ಗಟ್ಟಿತನ ಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

Being gentle is easy while the work is going right. When the night turns bad, when a child has been lost, it takes hardness to go on to the remaining beds.

ಆ ಗಟ್ಟಿತನ ಜನರ ಮೇಲೆ ಅಲ್ಲ. ಎಲೆ ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗುವುದು ಬಿಸಿಲನ್ನು ತಡೆಯುವುದಕ್ಕೆ, ಬೇರೆ ಎಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ಗಾಯ ಮಾಡುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಅಲ್ಲ.

That hardness is not turned on people. The leaf hardens to take the sun, not to cut the other leaves.
