ಸಜ್ಜನಾ ಏವ ಸಾಧೂನಾಂ: ಕಂಪನ್ನು ಹೊತ್ತೊಯ್ಯುವ ಗಾಳಿ

ಒಬ್ಬ ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿದ ಸುದ್ದಿ ಹೇಗೆ ಹೊರಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಯೋಚಿಸಿ ನೋಡಬೇಕು. ಅವನೇ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಬೇರೆ ಯಾರೋ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಆ ಯಾರೋ ಯಾರು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಗುರುತಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅನುಷ್ಟುಪ್ ಛಂದಸ್ಸಿನ ಮೊದಲ ಅರ್ಧ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿ, ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅರ್ಧ ಒಂದು ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ಇಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಸಜ್ಜನಾ ಏವ ಸಾಧೂನಾಂ ಪ್ರಥಯನ್ತಿ ಗುಣೋತ್ಕರಮ್ ।
ಗುಣಾನಾಂ ಸೌರಭಂ ಪ್ರಾಯಸ್ತನುತೇ ದಿಕ್ಷು ಮಾರುತಃ ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

सज्जना एव साधूनां प्रथयन्ति गुणोत्करम् ।
गुणानां सौरभं प्रायस्तनुते दिक्षु मारुतः ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

sajjanā eva sādhūnāṃ prathayanti guṇotkaram |
guṇānāṃ saurabhaṃ prāyastanute dikṣu mārutaḥ ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಸಜ್ಜನಾಃ (सज्जनाः, sajjanāḥ) = ಸಜ್ಜನರು (good people)
ಏವ (एव, eva) = ಮಾತ್ರ (alone)
ಸಾಧೂನಾಮ್ (साधूनाम्, sādhūnām) = ಸಾಧುಗಳ (of good men)
ಪ್ರಥಯನ್ತಿ (प्रथयन्ति, prathayanti) = ಹರಡುತ್ತಾರೆ (spread abroad)
ಗುಣೋತ್ಕರಮ್ (गुणोत्करम्, guṇotkaram) = ಗುಣಗಳ ರಾಶಿಯನ್ನು (the whole heap of merits)
ಗುಣಾನಾಮ್ (गुणानाम्, guṇānām) = ಗುಣಗಳ, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹೂವಿನ ಗುಣಗಳ (of qualities, here of the flowers’)
ಸೌರಭಮ್ (सौरभम्, saurabham) = ಪರಿಮಳವನ್ನು (the fragrance)
ಪ್ರಾಯಃ (प्रायः, prāyaḥ) = ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ (as a rule)
ತನುತೇ (तनुते, tanute) = ಹರಡುತ್ತದೆ (stretches out)
ದಿಕ್ಷು (दिक्षु, dikṣu) = ದಿಕ್ಕುದಿಕ್ಕಿಗೆ (in every direction)
ಮಾರುತಃ (मारुतः, mārutaḥ) = ಗಾಳಿ (the wind)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಸಾಧುಗಳ ಗುಣಗಳ ರಾಶಿಯನ್ನು ಹರಡುವವರು ಸಜ್ಜನರೇ. ಗುಣಗಳ ಪರಿಮಳವನ್ನು ದಿಕ್ಕುದಿಕ್ಕಿಗೆ ಹರಡುವುದು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಗಾಳಿಯೇ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

It is good people alone who spread abroad the heap of merits that good men have. As a rule it is the wind that stretches the fragrance of flowers out in every direction.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಉತ್ಕರ ಎಂದರೆ ರಾಶಿ. ಗುಣೋತ್ಕರ ಎಂದರೆ ಒಂದು ಗುಣವಲ್ಲ, ಗುಣಗಳ ರಾಶಿ. ಪ್ರಥ್ ಎಂಬ ಧಾತುವಿಗೆ ಅಗಲವಾಗುವುದು ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥ. ಪ್ರಥಯನ್ತಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಅಗಲವಾಗಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಹರಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.

Utkara is a heap. Gunotkara is not one merit but a whole heap of them. The root prath means to grow wide; prathayanti is to make wide, to spread.

ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯ ಒಂದು ಭಾಗ ಹೇಳದೆ ಉಳಿದಿದೆ. ಗಾಳಿ ಪರಿಮಳವನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಹೊತ್ತೊಯ್ಯುತ್ತದೆ ಮಾತ್ರ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಹೊಗಳುವವನು ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬನ ಗುಣಕ್ಕೆ ಏನನ್ನೂ ಸೇರಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದನ್ನು ಮೂಗಿಗೆ ಮುಟ್ಟುವಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ತರುತ್ತಾನೆ.

Half of the comparison is left unsaid. The wind does not make the fragrance, it only carries it. In the same way the man who praises adds nothing to another’s merit. He only brings it to where it can be smelled.

ಪ್ರಾಯಃ ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಎಚ್ಚರದ ಪದ. ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ. ಗಾಳಿ ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೂ ಹತ್ತಿರ ನಿಂತವನಿಗೆ ಪರಿಮಳ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅಲ್ಲಗಳೆಯುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.

Prayah, as a rule, is a careful word. Not always, only usually. The verse does not deny that a man standing close by will catch the fragrance even with no wind.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಇಲಾಖೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ಕಿರಿಯನ ಕೆಲಸ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಸರಿಡಿದು ಹೇಳುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದು ನಿಮಿಷ ಸಾಕು. ಆ ಒಂದು ನಿಮಿಷ ಅವನ ಮುಂದಿನ ಕೆಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳನ್ನು ಬದಲಿಸಬಹುದು.

It takes a minute to name a junior in a meeting and say the work was good. That minute can change the next few years for him.

ಹೊಗಳಿದವನಿಗೆ ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವ ನಷ್ಟವೂ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಗಾಳಿಗೆ ಪರಿಮಳ ಹೊತ್ತೊಯ್ಯುವುದರಿಂದ ಏನೂ ಕಳೆದುಹೋಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೂ ಬಹಳ ಜನ ಅದನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

The one who praises loses nothing by it. The wind loses nothing by carrying a scent. And yet a great many people will not do it.
