ವಚನೈರಸತಾಂ ಮಹೀಯಸೋ: ದುರ್ಜನರ ಮಾತಿಗೆ ಮಣಿಯ ಬೆಲೆ

ಆಭರಣದ ಅಂಗಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಳೆಯ ಹರಳೊಂದನ್ನು ಧೂಳು ತುಂಬಿದ ಡಬ್ಬಿಯಿಂದ ತೆಗೆದರೆ ಅಂಗಡಿಯವನು ಮೊದಲು ಅದನ್ನು ಒರೆಸುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಬೆಲೆ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮಾಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅದೇ ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ಮನುಷ್ಯರಿಗೆ ಅನ್ವಯಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಮೊದಲ ಸಾಲು ದಾವೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ, ಎರಡನೆಯ ಸಾಲು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ನಾಲ್ಕು ಪಾದಗಳ ವೃತ್ತ, ನಿಖರ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ನಾವು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ವಚನೈರಸತಾಂ (वचनैरसतां, vacanairasatāṃ) = ದುರ್ಜನರ ಮಾತುಗಳಿಂದ (by the words of the wicked)
ಮಹೀಯಸೋ (महीयसो, mahīyaso) = ಮಹಾತ್ಮನ (of the great one)
ನ (न, na) = ಇಲ್ಲ (not)
ಖಲು (खलु, khalu) = ನಿಜವಾಗಿ (surely)
ವ್ಯೇತಿ (व्येति, vyeti) = ಕಳೆದುಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ (goes away)
ಗುರುತ್ವಮುದ್ಧತೈಃ (गुरुत्वमुद्धतैः, gurutvamuddhataiḥ) = ದೊಡ್ಡಸ್ತಿಕೆ, ಉದ್ಧಟ ಮಾತುಗಳಿಂದ (greatness, by the arrogant words)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ದುರ್ಜನರ ಉದ್ಧಟ ಮಾತುಗಳಿಂದ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನ ಗೌರವ ಕುಂದುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಹೊಲದ ಧೂಳು ಮುಚ್ಚಿದರೆ ಮಣಿಯ ಬೆಲೆ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆಯೇ?

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

The greatness of the great does not fall away through the arrogant words of the wicked. Does a jewel lose its great worth when covered with the dust of a field?

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತು ಮತ್ತು ಧೂಳು ಎರಡೂ ಹೊರಗಿನಿಂದ ಬಂದು ಅಂಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ವಸ್ತುಗಳು. ಮಣಿಯ ಒಳಗಿನ ಗುಣ ಬದಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಮೇಲಿನ ಪದರ ಮಾತ್ರ ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ ಇದರ ಸೊಬಗು.

Words and dust both arrive from outside and stick. The charm lies in the likeness: the jewel’s inner quality stays, only the outer layer changes.

ಮಹಾರ್ಘತಾ ಎಂದರೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಬೆಲೆಯುಳ್ಳದ್ದು. ಬೆಲೆ ಮಣಿಯೊಳಗೇ ಇದೆ, ನೋಡುವವನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನು ಈ ಪದ ಹೊತ್ತಿದೆ.

Maharghata means of great price. The word carries the thought that the price lies in the jewel, not in the onlooker’s opinion.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳ ಮುಂದೆ ಒಬ್ಬ ಹಿರಿಯ ವೈದ್ಯರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಯಾರೋ ಅಪಪ್ರಚಾರ ಮಾಡಿದಾಗ ಅವರ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕೆಲಸ ಅದರಿಂದ ಅಳಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೂ ಧೂಳನ್ನು ಒರೆಸಲು ಸಮಯ ಹಿಡಿಯುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಮರೆಯಬಾರದು.

When someone slanders a senior doctor before students, years of work are not erased by it. Yet we should not forget that wiping off the dust takes time.

ನಮ್ಮ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬಂದ ಟೀಕೆಯನ್ನು ಎರಡು ಭಾಗ ಮಾಡಿ ನೋಡಬಹುದು. ಒಂದು ಭಾಗ ಧೂಳು, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಭಾಗ ನಿಜವಾದ ಗೀರು ಆಗಿರಬಹುದು. ಗೀರನ್ನು ತಿದ್ದಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು.

We can split a criticism into two parts. One part may be dust, the other a real scratch. The scratch should be mended.
