Hoping for what gain does the lion go at the thundering clouds? Not bearing another’s rise is simply the nature of the mighty.

About this subhashita

The word prarthayate can mean to wish for or to go against. The second fits the picture of a lion leaping at a cloud, so we have taken it.

Payodhara means the water bearer, the cloud. The poet’s idea is that the lion hears the cloud’s thunder as a challenge to its own roar.

For life today

It is not clear whether to read this with admiration or as a warning. A safe reading is that self-respect and intolerance sit on two sides of one line.

Noticing the stir within us at a colleague’s rise is the first step. A feeling that has been named is already half cooled.
