ಚಾತಕಸ್ತ್ರಿಚತುರಾನ್: ಮೂರು ನಾಲ್ಕು ಹನಿ ಬೇಡಿದವನಿಗೆ ಇಡೀ ಮಳೆ

ಬೇಸಿಗೆಯ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲ ಮಳೆಯ ಹನಿ ಬೀಳುವವರೆಗೆ ಕಾಯುವ ಅನುಭವ ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನವರಿಗೆ ಇದೆ. ಆ ಕಾಯುವಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಬಗೆಯ ಬೇಡಿಕೆ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ.

ಕವಿಗಳ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೀಗೆ ಬೇಡುವ ಹಕ್ಕಿ ಚಾತಕ. ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅದರ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಬೇಡಿಕೆಯನ್ನೂ ಮೋಡದ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕೊಡುಗೆಯನ್ನೂ ಎದುರಾಡಿಸಿ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಚಾತಕಸ್ತ್ರಿಚತುರಾನ್ (चातकस्त्रिचतुरान्, cātakastricaturān) = ಚಾತಕ ಹಕ್ಕಿ, ಮೂರು ನಾಲ್ಕು (the chataka bird, three or four)
ಪಯಃಕಣಾನ್ಯಾಚತೇ (पयःकणान्याचते, payaḥkaṇānyācate) = ನೀರಿನ ಹನಿಗಳನ್ನು ಬೇಡುತ್ತದೆ (asks for drops of water)
ಜಲಧರಂ (जलधरं, jaladharaṃ) = ಮೋಡವನ್ನು (from the cloud)
ಪಿಪಾಸಯಾ (पिपासया, pipāsayā) = ಬಾಯಾರಿಕೆಯಿಂದ (out of thirst)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಚಾತಕ ಹಕ್ಕಿ ಬಾಯಾರಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಮೋಡವನ್ನು ಮೂರು ನಾಲ್ಕು ಹನಿ ನೀರನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ಬೇಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ಮೋಡವೇ ಇಡೀ ಜಗತ್ತನ್ನು ನೀರಿನಿಂದ ತುಂಬುತ್ತದೆ. ಆಹಾ, ಮಹಾತ್ಮರ ಉದಾರತೆ ಎಂಥದು.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Out of thirst the chataka bird asks the cloud for no more than three or four drops. That very cloud fills the whole world with water. Ah, how generous the great are.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಚಾತಕ ಹಕ್ಕಿ ಮಳೆಯ ನೀರನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ಕುಡಿಯುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಕವಿಗಳ ಪರಂಪರೆಯ ನಂಬಿಕೆ. ಅದು ಕವಿಸಮಯ, ಅಂದರೆ ಕವಿಗಳು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಂಡ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯ ರೂಢಿ.

That the chataka drinks only rainwater is a belief of the Sanskrit poets’ tradition. It is a poetic convention, a comparison the poets all accept.

ಹನ್ತ ಹನ್ತ ಎಂಬ ಎರಡು ಉದ್ಗಾರಗಳು ಬೆರಗನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತವೆ. ಬೇಡಿದ್ದು ಮೂರು ನಾಲ್ಕು ಹನಿ, ಕೊಟ್ಟದ್ದು ಇಡೀ ಜಗತ್ತು ಎಂಬ ಅಂತರವೇ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಚಮತ್ಕಾರ.

The double exclamation hanta hanta voices wonder. The gap between three or four drops asked and a whole world given is the verse’s stroke.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಕೊಡುವ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಇರುವವನು ಕೇಳಿದಷ್ಟನ್ನೇ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ನಿಲ್ಲಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಬ್ಬ ಹಿರಿಯ ವೈದ್ಯ ಒಂದು ಸಂದೇಹ ಕೇಳಿದ ಶಿಷ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಇಡೀ ಪಾಠವನ್ನೇ ಹೇಳಿದಾಗ ಇದೇ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ.

One who can give need not stop at what is asked. A senior physician answering one small doubt with a whole lesson shows exactly this.

ಮೋಡ ಚಾತಕಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಮಳೆ ಸುರಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗಾಗಿ ಸುರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಉದಾರತೆ ಕೇಳಿದವನಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸೀಮಿತವಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನೂ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

The cloud does not rain for the chataka alone, it rains for all. The verse also hints that generosity is not limited to the one who asked.
