Rivers do not themselves drink their water. Trees do not themselves eat their fruit. Clouds do not eat the crop. In the same way, the riches of the good exist for the good of others.
About this subhashita
Varivaha means carrier of water, that is, a cloud. The picture is of a cloud that helps the crop grow yet eats not a morsel of it.
Vibhuti means both riches and capacity. It can be read to include not only money but also knowledge, time and skill.

For life today
Whether what we hold is money or learning, we may now and then ask how much of it reaches others. This is truer still for teachers.
The river and the tree have no choice, a person does. That is why the verse calls it the mark of the good.
