ಅಹೋ ಮಹತ್ತ್ವಂ ಮಹತಾಂ: ಸಂಕಟದಲ್ಲೂ ಉಪಕಾರ ಮಾಡುವ ಚಂದ್ರ

ತಾನೇ ಜ್ವರದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೂ ರೋಗಿಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಲು ಬರುವ ವೈದ್ಯರು ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಪರಿಚಿತರೇ. ಅವರ ಮುಖದಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ತೊಂದರೆ ಕಾಣುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಅಂಥ ಹಿರಿಮೆಯನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಗ್ರಹಣದ ಚಂದ್ರನ ಚಿತ್ರದಿಂದ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ನಾಲ್ಕು ಪಾದಗಳ ವೃತ್ತದಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಅಹೋ (अहो, aho) = ಆಹಾ, ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯ (ah, how wonderful)
ಮಹತ್ತ್ವಂ (महत्त्वं, mahattvaṃ) = ಹಿರಿಮೆ (the greatness)
ಮಹತಾಮ್ (महताम्, mahatām) = ಹಿರಿಯರ (of the great)
ಅಪೂರ್ವಂ (अपूर्वं, apūrvaṃ) = ಹಿಂದೆ ಕಾಣದಂಥದು (unlike any seen before)
ವಿಪತ್ತಿಕಾಲೇಽಪಿ (विपत्तिकालेऽपि, vipattikāle’pi) = ಆಪತ್ತಿನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲೂ (even in a time of calamity)
ಪರೋಪಕಾರಃ (परोपकारः, paropakāraḥ) = ಇತರರಿಗೆ ಉಪಕಾರ (doing good to others)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಅಹೋ, ಹಿರಿಯರ ಹಿರಿಮೆ ಹಿಂದೆ ಕಾಣದಂಥದು. ಆಪತ್ತಿನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲೂ ಅವರು ಇತರರಿಗೆ ಉಪಕಾರವನ್ನೇ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ರಾಹುವಿನ ಬಾಯಿಗೆ ಬಿದ್ದರೂ ಚಂದ್ರ ಪುಣ್ಯದ ರಾಶಿಯನ್ನು ಕೊಡುವಂತೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Ah, the greatness of the great is like nothing seen before: even in a time of calamity they do good to others. It is just as the moon, though fallen into the mouth of Rahu, gives a heap of merit.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ರಾಹು ಚಂದ್ರನನ್ನು ನುಂಗುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಗ್ರಹಣದ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಕಲ್ಪನೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕವಿ ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ವಿವರಣೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ, ಒಂದು ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ಬಳಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾನೆ.

That Rahu swallows the moon is the old picture of an eclipse. The poet is not offering a scientific account here, he is using an image.

ಗ್ರಹಣ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ನಾನ, ದಾನ, ಜಪ ಪುಣ್ಯಕರ ಎಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಚಂದ್ರ ತಾನು ಸಂಕಟದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲೇ ಇತರರಿಗೆ ಪುಣ್ಯದ ಅವಕಾಶ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂಬ ಧ್ವನಿ ಇದೆ.

Tradition holds that bathing, giving and prayer at the time of an eclipse bring merit. So there is a hint that the moon gives others a chance at merit at the very time he is in trouble himself.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ತನ್ನ ನೋವಿನ ನಡುವೆಯೂ ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರ ನೋವಿಗೆ ಕಿವಿಗೊಡುವವರು ನಮ್ಮ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಇದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅವರನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸಿ ಗೌರವಿಸುವುದು ನಮ್ಮ ಕೆಲಸ.

There are people around us who listen to another’s pain in the midst of their own. Noticing and honouring them is our part.

ಹಾಗೆಂದು ಸಂಕಟದಲ್ಲಿರುವವರೆಲ್ಲ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಲೇಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಒತ್ತಾಯಿಸುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದು ಹಿರಿಮೆಯ ಒಂದು ಲಕ್ಷಣವನ್ನು ಮೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತಿದೆ, ಅಷ್ಟು ಮಾತ್ರ.

The verse does not demand that everyone in trouble must help. It admires one mark of greatness, that is all.
