ಅಚಿಂತ್ಯಾಃ ಪಂಥಾನಃ: ಮಹಾತ್ಮರ ದಾರಿಗಳು ಊಹೆಗೆ ನಿಲುಕವು

ಒಂದೇ ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ಇರಬಹುದು. ಒಬ್ಬರ ಕಟ್ಟುನಿಟ್ಟು ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ತಿದ್ದುತ್ತದೆ, ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರ ಮೃದುತ್ವ ಅವರನ್ನು ಅರಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಬ್ಬರೂ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವರೇ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವುದು ಸುಲಭವಲ್ಲ.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅದನ್ನೇ ಪುರಾಣದ ಎರಡು ಕಥೆಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಒಂದು ಸಾಲಿಗೆ ಸುಮಾರು ಮೂವತ್ತನಾಲ್ಕು ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳ, ನಾಲ್ಕು ಪಾದಗಳ ವೃತ್ತ.

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಅಚಿಂತ್ಯಾಃ ಪಂಥಾನಃ (अचिन्त्याः पन्थानः, acintyāḥ panthānaḥ) = ಊಹಿಸಲಾಗದ ದಾರಿಗಳು (unthinkable ways)
ಕಿಮಪಿ ಮಹತಾಮ್ (किमपि महताम्, kimapi mahatām) = ಮಹಾತ್ಮರಿಗೆ ಏನೋ ಒಂದು ಬಗೆಯ (of the great, of some strange kind)
ಅಂಧಕರಿಪೋಃ (अन्धकरिपोः, andhakaripoḥ) = ಅಂಧಕನ ವೈರಿಯಾದ ಶಿವನ (of Shiva, the foe of Andhaka)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಮಹಾತ್ಮರ ದಾರಿಗಳು ಊಹೆಗೆ ನಿಲುಕದವು. ಶಿವನ ಕಣ್ಣಿನಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ತೇಜಸ್ಸು ಮದನನನ್ನು ಕೇವಲ ಕಥೆಯಾಗಿಸಿತು. ಅದಲ್ಲದೆ ಅತ್ರಿ ಮುನಿಯ ಕಣ್ಣಿನಿಂದ ಮತ್ತೆ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಬೆಳಕು ಹರಡಿ, ಈ ಮೂರು ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಮದನನಿಂದ ತುಂಬಿದ್ದಾಗಿಸಿತು.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

The ways of the great are beyond thought. The brilliance that came from the eye of Shiva, the foe of Andhaka, left Madana a mere tale. Yet the light born from the eye of the sage Atri spread, and by it these three worlds became full of Madana.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಮದನ ಎಂದರೆ ಪ್ರೇಮದ ದೇವತೆ ಕಾಮ. ಶಿವನ ಕಣ್ಣಿನ ಉರಿ ಅವನನ್ನು ದೇಹವಿಲ್ಲದವನನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿತು ಎಂಬ ಕಥೆ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿದೆ. ಅಮದನಾ ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಈ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

Madana is Kama, the god of love. The story that the fire of Shiva’s eye left him without a body is well known. The word amadana points to that story.

ಅತ್ರಿ ಮುನಿಯ ಕಣ್ಣಿನಿಂದ ಚಂದ್ರ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಎಂಬ ಕಥೆ ಪುರಾಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳಕು ಎಂದರೆ ಅದೇ ಎಂದು ನಾವು ತಿಳಿದಿದ್ದೇವೆ, ಆದರೆ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೆಸರು ಹೇಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

It is said that the Puranas tell of the moon being born from the eye of the sage Atri. We take the light here to mean that, though the verse does not name it.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಒಬ್ಬ ಹಿರಿಯ ವೈದ್ಯ ತೀರ ಕಠಿಣವಾಗಿ ಕಲಿಸಬಹುದು, ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬ ಮೃದುವಾಗಿ. ಇಬ್ಬರ ಶಿಷ್ಯರೂ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ವೈದ್ಯರಾಗಬಹುದು. ದಾರಿ ಬೇರೆಯಾದರೂ ಗುರಿ ಒಂದೇ ಇರಬಹುದು.

One senior doctor may teach very strictly and another gently. The students of both may become good doctors. The paths differ, yet the aim may be the same.

ಮಹಾತ್ಮರ ನಡೆಯನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳದಿದ್ದರೂ ಕೂಡಲೇ ತೀರ್ಪು ಕೊಡದಿರುವುದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು. ಹಾಗೆಂದು ಎಲ್ಲ ನಡೆಯೂ ಮೆಚ್ಚುವಂಥದ್ದು ಎಂದು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.

It is good not to pass quick judgement on a great person’s conduct even when we do not understand it. The verse does not say that every conduct deserves approval.
