Ambubachi begins

Ambubachi is the yearly closing of the Kamakhya temple near Guwahati in late June, from the time the Sun enters the star Ardra at the start of the rains.

How it is kept

At the Kamakhya temple near Guwahati the doors close at the appointed moment and stay closed for three days. No worship is done, and in many Assamese homes digging, ploughing and sowing stop, and some avoid cooked food. Lakhs of pilgrims and sadhus gather on Nilachal hill for the Ambubachi Mela, waiting for the doors to open.

The story

Kamakhya is a Shakti Pitha: when Vishnu’s discus cut the body of Sati, the tradition holds that her yoni fell here, and the Goddess is worshipped in a stone over a spring, not in an image. Ambubachi, when the Sun enters Ardra at the start of the rains, is held to be the Goddess’s yearly time of menstruation, and with it the earth’s own season of fertility.

Which day Anudina gives

Anudina works out the Sun’s entry into Ardra by the Surya Siddhanta reckoning, and keeps the days from that entry to the end of the first quarter (pada) of Ardra. Ambubachi begins on the first of these days; the last is the day it ends.

It is kept in Assam. Anudina shows it under the North Indian custom, and under the South Indian custom only when “Show festivals of other regions too” is turned on. A reader who ticks the Shakta lineage in the Tradition sheet sees it too, wherever they are.

The days were compared with the notices of the Kamakhya temple as reported in Sentinel Assam, ETV Bharat, The Week and the Free Press Journal: 22 to 26 June 2021, 22 to 25 June 2024, 22 to 26 June 2025 and 22 to 26 June 2026.
